Amai's wound had healed quite nicely. She still had a nasty scar but she almost forgot about it with how much had been going on these past few months. Her father had been coming over every day to help her learn how to use her quirk, Shoto had also helped when he had free time. You'd both been sneakily trying to move his stuff into the house without Amai noticing. You didn't really want to make a big announcement about the two of you living together because you knew she would get incredibly excited and you'd noticed that when her emotions became stronger, she had more trouble controlling her quirk. Despite you not having a quirk, you were quick to pick up on things and learn more about them also. You enjoyed seeing Amai have fun learning how to use this new power just like her Papa and Roki, it was as if she had been handed everything she had ever wanted. You watched out of the kitchen window as they all stood on the concrete of your back garden, they were doing some sort of exercise to help Amai feel in control of her power but they couldn't seem to get it done because Amai kept cracking up in fits of giggles. You could see that Touya was trying his hardest to stifle his own laughter while Shoto was completely out of the loop. He had no idea what was going on. When he turned to look at you through the window you could see exactly why they were giggling. While he was having a nap earlier because he'd been exhausted from moving in, they'd drawn on his face. You burst into laughter, doubling over against the kitchen counter, tears springing into your eyes as your sides burned with the strain. You grabbed your phone and headed outside, the tears still running down your face as you pointed your camera at him, taking a picture. You went closer, the giggles still bursting from the back of your throat as you showed him the photo. His eyes went wide as he saw the numerous drawings they'd put on his face as Amai and Touya both doubled over in laugher. Shoto headed over to them, a huge smile on his face as he began to tickle Amai in "revenge." You laughed and laughed before Shoto came over to you. "It's funny is it?" His hands shot to your sides as you squealed, trying to get away from him as he began to tickle you too. Squirming and wriggling to no avail you laughed and laughed until you could hardly breath. Looking down at the photo as your lockscreen now still made you smile fondly. Your happiness didn't last long though. It never did.
You were winding down on the sofa after a long day. Touya hadn't been over the last few days, something to do with the roads by his house or at least that's what Shoto had told you. Amai had been upset but she understood. For the time being, Shoto had been helping her around his hero work and finishing moving the last of his stuff in. You took a sip of your glass of wine as you rested your head on Shoto's shoulder, smiling softly. It felt nice to finally have him fully moved in. Amai was still none the wiser about how he had slept over every night for the past few months but you figured that was just because she had been too busy working on her quirk. She had been awfully tired lately. The customers in the café had missed her presence greatly these past few months. You were shocked out of your thoughts when Shoto's phone buzzed against the coffee table. You sat up, allowing him to answer it, not quite catching the name on the caller ID. You sat on the sofa, running your finger around the edge of the glass as you waited for Shoto to be done. That was until you heard the urgency in his voice as he flew to his feet. "No, where are you...tell me.....I can get you some help....Touya listen to me." Your eyes went wide as you stood up, trying to read Shoto's face. He took the phone from his ear and pressed the speaker button. You could hear the sound on cars and distant music. There was a harsh, strangled cough from over the line. "(Y.....Y/N)? Can.....can she hear me?" The pain in his voice brought tears to your eyes. "Yes Touya....I can hear you." The was a faint smile in his voice when he spoke. "I....I want you to know....I'm.....glad I got to meet you.....and.....the time we spent together was....the best time of my life....give.....give my baby a hug for me....okay?" Tears flowed down your cheeks as you felt Shoto take your hand, squeezing it gently. "Wait Touya...why...why are you talking like this....what's happened...talk to me." There was another cough and a pained groan as he began to speak again. "Apparently....there were still some vigilantes....who were less than happy that I was let off with.....what I did...all those years ago....I was....I was attacked....there's...oh my god there's so much blood.....I'm...I'm so scared." A sob left your lips at the fear in his voice. He'd always been so strong but right now you could hear the little, abused boy in him coming out. You wiped your eyes, taking a deep breath. "Touya, tell us where you are. We can call an ambulance and come get you. You can be okay, alright?" A small sniffle was heard over the speaker as his voice became weaker. "It's...too late....I don't know where I am...there's no way....listen....tell my baby I love her.....please....and Shoto.....look after my girls for me...okay bro?" Shoto flinched beside you upon hearing his name, suddenly attentive. "Touya?" No answer, only the background noise of cars. "Touya?!" Louder and more urgent this time but still with no response. You fell to your knees, the tears streaming down your cheeks as your heart broke.
Shoto pulled some strings with the heroes and got a search party together. You tried your best to get him to let you go with but he insisted you had to stay with Amai. You paced back and forth in the living room staring at your phone on the coffee table waiting for Shoto to call and tell you that Touya was fine and that he'd just passed out or something. You paced and paced until your feet hurt, the feeling of crushing dread heavy on your heart.
It was hours before you heard anything. Your phone buzzed on the coffee table, not a call but a text.
"We found him. I'm coming home now. It's not good."
Your heart broke once again.Explaining to Amai was the most awful thing you ever had to do. you tried your best to phrase it in a way that she'd understand. She cried for hours, clutching onto you or Shoto for dear life. It felt like your heart had no time to heal as it broke once more.
You'd had to buy a decent black dress for yourself and Amai. His parents didn't make a big deal of the funeral due to publicity. You were wrapped in hugs by his mother, his brother Natsuo and his sister Fuyumi who you had met once before and was now a regular customer at your café. Amai spent the day on Rei's lap, cuddling against her and being uncharacteristically quiet. You didn't really blame her. It didn't feel real to you. You'd spent so much time having to randomly stop seeing him both when you were together and after you split that it hadn't sunk in for you. That was until you went up to the casket. His skin had always been pale, and even with the addition of makeup his skin was so pale. You fished into your pocket and pulled out the bracelet he'd given you for the first birthday you'd spent together. It wasn't fancy and it was a little worn but you knew you had to give it back to him. You reached out to pick up his hand before you gasped, dropping his hand back to his chest, tears welling in your eyes. Shoto's hand came to your shoulder, a worried look on his face. "He's.....so cold...he was always.....always warm....no matter what weather....but....now he's not." You let out a small sob as Shoto put his arm around you, kissing the top of your head but not saying a word as you bit back your sadness and tied the bracelet around his wrist. You leant forward and pressed a small kiss against his forehead. "Rest well, Touya." You turned and headed back to your seat.
Amai was quiet and clingy for a while after that, especially with Shoto. She spent a lot of time sleeping in your bed with the two of you, too scared to go back into her own room alone because of nightmares. You didn't mind all too much, it made you feel safer having them both close. You'd closed the café for a few weeks. The people of the city understood and didn't pry. It wasn't public knowledge that he'd passed but they knew something had happened. They never did manage to find the people who attacked him, no matter how much Shoto pushed for it. The Todoroki family had decided to have him buried right by your parents so it was easy for you and Amai to visit, which you did on the same occasions that you visited your parents' graves. It was hard for all of you. Rei cried almost every time you took Amai to visit her after that for quite a while. Enji was less open about his emotions but you could tell that it was hurting him. You knew that their family hadn't always been perfect but despite that, they still mourned the same as any other family at the death of their eldest son. Not long after that, Enji retired from heroing, passing the agency on to Shoto. He wasn't exactly happy about that because it meant a lot of office work but he took the job anyway. You knew that the office work meant that he was safer than he would be out in the field so you were secretly happy. After a few months life had basically returned to normal. Not quite though. You'd enrolled Amai into school by her request. She wanted to learn more about her quirk so she could become a hero just like Roki. You weren't exactly happy about that one but you weren't going to limit what she wanted to do, you knew she'd be safe if Shoto was watching over her anyway. You still stopped to think every now and again as you watched Amai listening intently as Shoto told her all about his UA days and his very colourful friends who were now pro heroes Deku and Ingenium. You thought about how you'd gotten to where you are. About what you and the people around you had gone through. And about how happy you were to have a gorgeous daughter. And how lucky you were to be loved by Pro Hero Shoto Todoroki.
