If you were told you could have anything in the world, any one thing your heart truly desired, what would it be?

A new car?

A hot body?

The ability to speak every language?

To be a millionaire?

To find your soulmate?

Or maybe even to be the gender opposite your own for a time?

Hikaru and her twin sister, Kaede, were both seething silently the whole plane trip to Thailand. Out of the blue, their long widowed father told them they were moving. The only ones excited for the trip were their dad, obviously, and their older brother, Daichi. Hikaru and Kaede were adamant about not moving; their friends were in Japan, they loved their school, and try-outs for the school play were just around the corner. But none of their pleading, crying, or reasoning could sway their father.

Now here they were, sitting side by side on the plane, simultaneously moping.

Hikaru was trying to distract herself from thoughts about being up in the air by reading one of the mangas she'd brought along. Kaede was merely listening to music on her phone while watching the clouds go by underneath them out the window. Hikaru mentally shuddered, unable to understand how Kaede could be so chill about heights like that. But Kaede had her own fear as well, so neither girl made fun of the other, ever.

Hikaru settled into her seat, losing herself in her dog-eared volume #1 of Vampire Knight, getting lost in the battle Zero was having with himself over Yuki's blood. Hikaru wondered if blood really tasted that good to a vampire?

Then wanted to smack herself, since vampires didn't even exist.

She glanced over at Kaede, not surprised to see her sister dozing in her own seat, head lolling. Hikaru guided Kaede's head down to rest on her shoulder, and continued reading her manga.

Hikaru and Kaede stood side-by-side, staring disdainfully at the cab their father had flagged down. A moving truck had already picked up their other belongings earlier, and taken them to their new house. Hikaru bit her lower lip, not wanting to cause a fight in front of strangers. Yeah, this cab driver probably didn't understand Japanese, but that didn't mean he couldn't understand tones and gestures!

It seemed for once shy, soft-spoken Kaede didn't have that problem.

"Papa!" Kaede complained, wrinkling her nose. "There is no way I'm riding in that death trap!"

Hikaru snorted before she realized it, then covered her mouth in shock. Oops.

Their father merely shook his head as he piled in the few bags they'd brought with them on the plane. "Daichi, you'll have to squeeze in the front with the driver."

"Papa!"

Hikaru gently nudged Kaede's arm. "Stop it!" she hissed in her sister's ear. "Fight with him when there isn't an audience!"

"I want to go home," Kaede whined petulantly, lower lip quivering. "Mama...we can't visit her here."

Oh... Hikaru understood instantly what the problem was. She hugged Kaede wordlessly, unable to comfort her with promises or sweet words. What could she possibly say or do to make it better? Nothing. There was no way she could convince their dad to take them back to Japan, and she couldn't afford to fly them back herself. All she got was a weekly allowance, and that went to manga, anime, clothes, and snacks. Hikaru lifted her face enough so her eyes showed over Kaede's head, gaze full of betrayal and hurt aimed at her father who was looking back.
