Emma has been described as a light sleeper most of the time, but can sleep hard if she really wanted to.
Emma thought this to be true. She has no-dream, imageless sleep most of the time; näive and unknowing to the concept of nightmares, mind at rest when it's supposed to.
Well, on one particular night, all of those factors decided to change.
-
Emma was falling.
In an infinite hole of swirling black and white, unable to move.
She couldn't breathe.
And then, it all ended.
-
She is in a room now, her mind befuddled and her emotions confused—pushing through doors that led to more empty rooms.
She didn't speak—she felt the need not to—but one person came into her mind through all of this nightmare chaos.
Ray.
Ray, her childhood and still bestest friend, her newly found boyfriend of two weeks, the love of her life, the person she spent most of her time with.
She wanted him—no, needed him. Right now.
She needed him to tell her that she was alright, that this was all a nightmare and nothing was logical, and that she would get to be with him and their family for the rest of their days.
She needed him to hold her in his tight and protective grasp, whisper a joke in her ear, smile and find a logical and reasonable solution to everything.
"Ray!" She finally screamed, her body stiffened to the bone, an array of rainbow colors blinding her eyes, and finally her nightmare ended with one image:
Ray and her whole family dead on the floor, vida flowers pierced through their hearts, their necks twisted in an odd way, eyes rolled into their whites, skin dulled and chapped...
-
Emma awoken with cold sweat and her breathing ragged, her vision unsteady and dizzy.
Her eyes started to overflow with tears and she sobbed silently, mourning for her family.
"Emma, are you okay?"
Her breathing hitched.
"Ray?"
"Shh, Emma, it's alright."
She felt arms go around her waist, holding her with visible protectiveness. Ray's chin lowered atop her head.
"Cry it all out," Ray advised.
So she did.
She sobbed into his shoulder, clutching onto his tear-dampened shirt, shaking with relief.
"I-I thought you and Don and Gilda and the others were dead," Emma hiccuped, "I was so scared. There were just so many colors... and... and I felt dizzy and weird."
"A nightmare," resolved Ray, rubbing circles onto Emma's back soothingly.
"I just..." Emma sighed, "wished you'd never leave me. Or our family, for that matter."
Suddenly, Ray's chin left the top of Emma's head to face her.
He was smiling—but not the signature Ray smirk. He was smiling a rare soft smile, usually reserved for Emma and Emma only.
"I made a promise four years ago that I would never leave you, and I am a man of my word. I'll never leave you Emma, for it is physically and mentally impossible.
"I couldn't leave you unprotected and vulnerable, and to be honest, I couldn't get a night's sleep without you. I love you, Emma, and I will never ever leave you."
He leaned in to kiss her softly, praying that she would understand.
It seemed that she did, because she returned the kiss wholeheartedly, her hands starting to tangle in Ray's always messy hair.
When they finally broke apart for air, Emma was knocked back into her normal self.
"Let's sleep," Emma said, yawning, "it's one in the morning. Sorry for waking you up, Ray."
Ray smirked. "When I confessed to you, I knew there was going to be nights like this. So, I took precautions."
Emma raised a brow in question.
"What precautions?" she inquired.
"Necessary precautions."
Ray led her down to the kitchen, pulling a chair for her and disappearing to the pantry, presumably getting something.
"This," Ray said, holding two steaming mugs of an unknown liquid, "is my own invention. Basically, it's supposed to make you have a dreamless sleep tonight. There's limited supply of these, however, so I did what I could."
Emma thanked him and sipped her liquid, tasting the coffee-scented taste and murmuring her approval.
"I don't know what I could without you, Ray," she sighed happily.
"You would live without this handsome boyfriend of yours by your side," he said cockily, chuckling right after the joke was said.
"Indeed, Ray, indeed."
