Part Two of 587 Miles and Back. It is highly suggested to read the first part before reading this.-
Summer was fading.
And so was Emma.
It has been four weeks since Ray has—indirectly—proposed to Emma. However, they weren't able to carry out the wedding due to Emma's decaying physical state, which demanded her to stay in bed at all times and barely move.
Ray has resumed work for his company from here in Japan, mostly to stay here with Emma. He was worried, and so was everyone else.
"Emma, love." Ray greeted as he walked in the hospital room with his laptop. The hospital has reluctantly allowed Ray to sit on Emma's bed and hold her, but keeping in mind to not disturb the beeping monitors and tubes.
Previously, Ray had requested to know the hospital's plan on the vaccine. He wanted his company to invest in it.
"Need to make sure you get a cure as fast as possible," Ray had shrugged before, planting a kiss on her forehead.
Emma had smiled noticably weakly, hoping that Ray's odd positivity to this situation was true.
Now Emma's condition was getting worse, losing both her ability to talk frequently and to survive without an adept oxygen mask.
"Did you eat breakfast?"
Emma nodded, smiling. Or at least trying to.
"How are you feeling?" Ray lowered his voice affectionately and settled in his usual spot next to Emma.
A thumbs-up from Emma confirmed his answer.
-
Emma was very aware that she doesn't have that much time left.
Dying is the worst case scenario. Obviously, she got prepared—she left Ray something inside their old bedroom drawers.
Now, it's just a matter of how Ray will react to this.
-
Emma tapped Ray twice on the shoulder, their sign for when Emma wants her oxygen mask removed so she could speak.
Ray nodded, going to slowly remove it and dangle it safely on a rack.
"R-Ray?" Emma's croaky, unstable voice came out almost like a whisper.
Ray immediately looked up from his laptop and faced Emma.
"Do you want me to hold you?" Ray inquired, knowing it's easier for her to focus when he's doing so.
Emma nodded.
Ray climbed into the blanket with her and put his arms around her loosely, trying not to mingle with the tubes or hold her too tight.
