The mood ring

This is a soulmate AU where everyone has a ring around their finger and it changes colour based on their soulmates emotions. The story goes into more detail.

"Mommy what's on my finger?" You ask at the age of four as a blue ring appears around your tiny finger.

"Well my darling that would be your mood ring, everyone has one and it tells you the emotions of your soulmate." Your mother explains to you.

"What does it mean if it's blue?" You ask showing her by holding up your hand. She takes your small cold hands into her warm ones softly.

"That means that they are sad" she tells you kindly.

"But why would they be sad?" You asked further.

"I don't know hunny maybe they lost something special today" you mother suggests as you frown at the thought of your soulmate being sad.

That night you entered the living room to see a big scene on the TV.

"Mommy what's that?" You ask pointing to the chaos in front of you on the screen.

"Oh no that's nothing just the news, you should be getting ready for bed, I'll be in, in a minute to tuck you in." She tells you sending you off with a kiss on the forehead as your eyes were glued to the screen.

"Two reported dead in a plane crash this evening" the news lady announces as your mom walks you back to your room.

~time skip a few years~

"So how's your soulmate have you met him yet?" Your best friend Mary Jane Watson asked as you both sat down on your bed after your long days at school. MJ had attended midtown high while you just attended plain old Queens high school.

"No I haven't met him yet but he's been very happy lately so that's a good thing" you tell the excited red head.

"Well we better get on that, I bet you he's quite the guy" you laugh at her response as you fall backwards to lay down. "Y/n what's wrong?" She asked once you suddenly stopped laughing and had a growing frown on your face.

"He's sad" you tell her quietly and confused at how someone's mood could change so quickly. You lift your hand to inspect the ring mark as the colours changed.

"I'm so sorry to hear that" she rubs your back gently as you hug her tightly.

As you two were working on your homework MJ revived a call from one of her friends aunts.

"Hello MJ I just thought I would call you let you know that Peter won't be at school for the next few days" aunt May told her sadly.

"May what's wrong? is everything alright?" MJ spoke worriedly into the phone.

"Well Ben was killed tonight in a store robbery" the kind woman cried.

"Oh May I'm so sorry for your loss, if there anything I can do just give me a call"

~time skip another few years~

"You still haven't found him yet? Come on it's been like forever" MJ shouts through the phone. She had met her soulmate Harry last year through a childhood friend but you were still alone. MJ had moved away recently to live with Harry meaning you haven't seen her much but you two were still closer than ever.

"No I've been too busy for a relationship anyway" you tell her as you turn on the news.

When you look at your hand on the remote you notice that somethings off. The colour on your ring is fading away into black.

"I'm sorry MJ I'm gonna have to call you back" you manage to choke out.

"Y/n are you alright-" you cut off your best friend by hanging up on her. Tears stream down your face as your worst fear has come true.

You soulmate was dying. And there was nothing you could do about it.

You raised your other hand to your mouth in disbelief at what you were seeing. Through blurry eyes you noticed the masked hero on TV but he wasn't swinging around like usual. His body was laying on top of a bridge almost as if it was....

Lifeless.
