Taehyun's hazy eyes fluttered open to the sight of the sun's piercing rays through his bedroom's partially cracked window, a patch of light placing itself onto the wooden floor of the room. He rolled onto his side, his dull eyes gazing upon the few trinkets around the space. Illuminated by the sliver of sunlight that had wedged itself between the gap in his curtains, he decided that it was time to get up and start his day.
He then pulled off his blanket, haphazardly tossing it away instead of properly fixing it due to the fact that he had no intention of remaking the now messy bed. Making his way across the cold floor, he pried open his closet to find his school uniform, pulling it on in no hurry due to him waking up earlier than his alarm clock. After finishing his outfit off with a monochrome striped tie, he turned to his bedside table, shutting off the alarm since there was no point in having it on now since he was already awake.
He then exited his room, checking his phone to realize it was riddled with notifications. Sliding open the group chat he was in, he was relieved to find that it was only so busy due to Huening Kai spamming a seemingly endless stream of memes into it, the others in the chat following in his pursuit. Taehyun merely rolled his eyes and returned the phone back to his pocket. In doing so, he noticed that his mother was sitting at the kitchen table, and he decided to try and strike up a conversation.
"I didn't realize you and Dad had come back from your business trip so early," he acknowledged, finding it strange to see his mother when he so rarely ever got the chance to see either of his parents due to their constant traveling.
"Your father is still on his trip," his mother stated, still maintaining her authoritarian attitude, even around her own son, "unfortunately, the company wanted me to come back, but only for a day or two. I don't understand why they want me back here for a couple of days just to send me to another city again, it makes no sense."
Taehyun only nodded in reply, knowing that even the slightest sarcastic remark would completely infuriate his uptight mother. Making his way across the room to the front door, he obtained his backpack from the hook in the closet, glancing back to his mother one last time as he waved a quick goodbye, shutting the door behind him.
The temperature outside was cool, and the wind was just strong enough to make Taehyun's dyed hair sway in the breeze. He then remembered the events that had occurred the night prior, and in hopes of catching a glimpse of the mystery boy, he hurriedly made his way to the park, knowing he had some time to spare due to his early rising that morning.
Even though he could hear no music, Taehyun was still hopeful nonetheless. He once again rounded the familiar corner of the street which he had done so many times before, but its previously dull meaning had now completely altered into something he could not even begin to explain—all because of a stranger he saw at the park.
Just before entering the archway, he paused for a moment, trying to listen for any noise coming from within the park's brick walls. Even though there was no music playing, he still had hope that the swingset boy would be there. Quietly peeking around the corner, he looked at the swingset and saw—nothing.
His once elated expression dropped, and only then did he realize how strangely he was behaving. He couldn't fathom why he felt so disappointed, but even so, he was devastated. Tossing his school bag to the side, he let his back hit the rough, bumpy brick wall behind him and slid down to the ground. With curled knees, he wrapped his arms around his legs and stared at the sidewalk solemnly.
He fidgeted with his hands, wondering if he should get up off of the ground and go to the bus stop. Though, he felt powerless to do so. There was a multitude of emotions conflicting with each other inside of him, but he was not sure how to handle them. Kang Taehyun usually wasn't one to wallow in his own sadness. He used logic and rationality to handle his emotions or problems, but with a situation as confusing as his, he was clueless on how to go about it.
Though, his confused thoughts came to a halt when he heard a sudden thud of something—or—someone hitting the ground. Hastily turning his head in the direction of the noise, he saw his backpack tipped over and in front of it, a boy who had fallen over it.
Immediately Taehyun sprung to his feet, "oh my god, I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have had my bag in front of the entrance like that," he then reached his hand out in an attempt to help the boy up, "are you okay?"
"Uh... yeah, I think so," he replied, tilting his head up, revealing his face, which was all too familiar to Taehyun.
With widened eyes, he was appalled at the fact it was the same boy he had seen in the park the previous night. Trying to keep calm, he then grabbed his hand and helped the boy up to his feet, "again, I'm sorry."
"Don't worry, it's fine," the brown-haired boy said in return, a soft smile spread across his face to try and ease the situation.
Only then did Taehyun notice the other boy's clothing, and was surprised to find it was identical to the ones he was wearing. With bewilderment, he asked, "wait, you go to the same school as me?"
The mystery boy then glanced at Taehyun's outfit, followed by him looking down at his own as well, "huh, guess so," he shrugged, returning his gaze back to the blonde in front of him, both feeling equally surprised at this new revelation.
"What's your name? Maybe I've seen you before," Taehyun inquired, though, he knew that he most definitely hadn't seen him before. Frankly, how on Earth would he be able to forget such a flawless face?
"Choi Beomgyu," he smiled, hopeful that maybe Taehyun would recognize his name.
He took a moment to think, trying his hardest to remember if he had ever heard the name Choi Beomgyu, but, no matter how much he attempted to recall it, nowhere in his mind could he remember hearing of him, "I'm Kang Taehyun, but... I don't think I've seen you around before," he confessed, feeling a twinge of guilt.
Attempting to lighten the mood, Beomgyu decided to change the subject once again, "oh, no worries," he let out a small laugh, "hey, do you want to maybe, head to school together? I mean, I know we just met, so it's okay if you don't want to, but if that's—"
Taehyun then quickly waved his hand, signaling to Beomgyu that he could stop nervously rambling, "we can walk to school together, Beomgyu," he smirked playfully.
Beomgyu smiled in return, the two then picking up their things and heading off in the direction of the school. Though the trip was a bit awkward and nerve-wracking, the two tried their best to converse with each other, with only their voices and laughter filling the quiet air of the frosty morning.
