May 10, 1918

It was a beautiful morning in Brooklyn. The sun was shining and the almost-summer heat was being perfectly balanced by a soft spring breeze.

"Good morning Evelyn" , a very joyful Sarah Rogers walked out of her apartment. She was wearing a red dress and it was clear that she was headed to the market

"Good morning dear", Evelyn, her neighbour smiled, "now we're do you think you're going with that belly of yours love? Tell me what you need I'll get it for you."

"I'm pregnant Evelyn, not disabled. I think I can go and shop the essentials" she joked

"Oh well I'm not your mother I can't tell you what to do. But at least let me come with you. This way you will have company and I will feel safer knowing Joseph won't murder me for not taking care of you and the baby"

"Well I suppose it won't hurt to have someone to talk to" Sarah gave Evelyn a bid smile

"Great let me grab my purse"Evelyn smiled back and walked inside her apartment.

A couple of minutes later she walked out holding a navy blue purse that matched her dress perfectly
"All set let's go"

Both women started walking towards the market. They were talking, exchanging news and once in a while some gossip they had overheard in the church.
"So tell me have you thought of a name yet?" Asked Evelyn

"Well we were talking about them before Joseph left for the war but never concluded on anything", Sarah picked a few apples, " if the child is a girl we have agreed to name her Rose but we never saw eye to eye on the boy's name. If it's a boy I want to name him George but Joseph insists on the name Steven" she walked to the cashier to pay for the fruits she had picked

"Well darling I think Rose is a beautiful name for a girl but we already have six people named George just in the neighbourhood. No no no your child will be special so I'm gonna side with Joseph here" said Evelyn as she paid for her groceries.

"How do you even know it will be spacial? The kid isn't even here yet" asked Sarah with a curious look

"Well its father is a very strong and stubborn Irish man and its mother is the best person I could ever hope to befriend. Trust me this kid will be special" she pointed at Sarah's belly

"Well we just have to wait and see I guess" Sarah patted her belly and both women started walking home.

When they arrived they saw two soldiers standing in front of Sarah's apartment door, knocking.

"I'm telling ya, ya moron, the lady isn't home" one man said. He was an average height man, with short grey hair. The other was far younger, with blond hair and at least 4 inches taller. They were both wearing their military uniforms

"Well we are gonna stay here 'till she shows up" said the younger man

"Can I help you gentlemen?" Sarah spoke as she and Evelyn approached them

"Sorry to bother ya ma'am. We are looking for a..." the shorter man paused as he looked at a piece of paper he had in his hand "...a Sarah Rogers. You don't happen to know where she is do ya?" He asked

"Why of course I do. She is me" she said
The men looked at each other and sighed simultaneously.

"My name is captain Harold Bradison ma'am. This is private Jim Keller. We are in the 107th infantry" he paused

"The 107th? My husband is placed there" said Sarah

"We know mrs Rogers. He is the reason we are here." Said the captain

"Well? Is he here? Is this another failed attempt to surprise me? Joseph come out I know where you're hiding" she said with a smile as she unlocked the door to her place.

"Ma'am please sit down. We um... we have some news." The captain pulled a chair he saw and gestured her to sit.

"What happened? Is my Joseph ok?" Her smile was starting to fade as she sat on the chair. Evelyn pulled a second chair and sat beside her, her face showing fear

"There was an incident two days ago" captain Bradison started "you husband and a couple other men were trapped and um...well they were all killed by mustard gas. I'm very sorry for your loss."

At that moment Sarah lost it. A scream escaped her lips and she fell on the ground, arms covering her eyes as she cried

"No no no no. This can't be happening. No I...I... he promised" she said between sobs "he promised to return"
Evelyn rushed to her side and held her as she cried

"Mrs Rogers your husband was a very good man, a trustworthy soldier and a good friend. He talked about you a lot. And your unborn child. He was so excited to become a father. I ow him my life. Should you ever need anything, you come straight to me." The private spoke " is there anything I can do?" He asked but Sarah was not paying attention to him.

She was lost in her mind. Thinking of all the memories she had with Joseph. Good and bad. What was she gonna do now? How was she supposed to raise a child alone? How would the child grow up without a father? All kinds of questions were popping in her mind. She couldn't think straight.
The captains voice snapped her out of her thoughts

"Mrs Rogers??" He asked " mrs Rogers did you hear me?"

"My apologies captain I was...I...." she said

"I asked if you want us to prepare the funeral for you" He put a hand on her shoulder "we understand what you are going through. You don't have to do anything. The 107th will prepare it all"

"Thank you captain Bradison for the offer but he is my husband and I need to do it" she sighed "now gentlemen I hate being rude but I'm gonna have to ask you to leave. I need time for myself" she said

"We understand. Ma'am" they nodded at the woman and left the apartment.

"Oh Evelyn what am I gonna do. I'm a nurse I don't get paid enough to feed the child and afford this apartment. I'm scared and I don't know the first thing about raising children" she said with a worried look as she made sure the men were gone.

"Listen to me" replied Evelyn "you Sarah Rogers are one of the strongest women I know. You will figure something out you always do" she hugged her as Sarah starting crying again.
