Mitch's POV
"Hey" someone said as they sat down next to me on the ground. Thea had been asleep for a few minutes when I had snicked out of the Homestead and sat right outside the sleeping shack. I turned my head to the side and saw Newt, looking around the Glade.
"Hey" I replied quietly, still a bit shaken up from what happened earlier with Ben. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that he had attacked me out of nowhere. Why would he do something like that? I thought Gally was the one who didn't like me.
"How are you feeling?" he asked, looking at me with worry-filled eyes which warmed my heart.
"How do you think I feel?" I asked and he chuckled, shaking his head before looking back at the Galde.
"I don't know" he said "I have no idea. To be honest, I never know what's going on in that head of yours. That's why I asked in the first place" he said and I smiled at him.
"I'm fine" I said, staring at him again. Looking at the way his face was glowing with the sun, how his eyes would sometimes drop to my lips before quickly going back to my eyes and how his lips would curl into his gorgeous smile.
"You're staring" he informed quietly and I looked away, a blush creeping on my cheeks. "You do that a lot you know?"
"I don't"
"Keep telling yourself that, Tommy" he said in a chuckle and I blushed even more at the nickname that escaped his lips so easily. We stayed seated like this, looking around and watching the gladers work for a while before my eyes met the sight of Gally stomping his way towards us with his usual scowl and frowned eyebrows. And after everything that had happened, I had no energy left to deal with the douche.
"I'm gonna go" I said, getting up and looking down at Newt who harbored a disappointed expression before it was quickly replaced by a kind smile. "I need to talk to Alby" I informed and he nodded, noticing Gally walking fast towards us and he looked at me knowingly. Of course he knew. Everyone knew how the guy seemed to have a problem with me.
I walked away and joined Chuck and Alby who were sitting together not too far away. I sat down next to Alby and waited for him to say anything but when his mouth stayed shut I decided to ask.
"So what happened to him?" I asked Alby. He turned his head slightly towards me before going back to staring at the ground, deep in thoughts. Probably thinking about what had happened.
"It's called the Changing" he replied quietly, never getting his eyes off the ground. "It happens when somebody gets stung. Listen, we haven't been able to get something clear from Ben since it happened. He's not making any sense. He's only going to get worse. The infection is spreading, he's dangerous." he explained. "What did he say to you?" he asked me, finally looking up and this time I was the one looking down at my hands, fidgeting.
"He said he saw me. That this is all my fault. How could this be my fault?" I asked as I was confused, lost and worried. What did he even mean by it being my fault? I didn't do anything, right? What could I have possibly done to make him go completely mad? Was he talking about our situation perhaps? Did I have something to do with the maze? No, that was crazy. How could I be part of all of this? If I was part of it I wouldn't have ended up here, right? But what if? What if I really was the cause of everyone's misery? I felt bile rise up in my throat at the disgusting thought and shook my head to get the idea away. But Alby didn't reply which only increased the restless swirl of nervousness I was feeling.
"Get some rest" he said, patting my back a few times before standing up and leaving.
"Wh- Alby" I called after him.
