Remembering the way she took out that kid in the school I knew better then to test her. I didn't understand why shes treating me like this but I hoped I'd find out soon.Taking a deep breath I held my hands up in surrender.
"Alright...calm down. Let's just find our way out of here and once we're safe..you don't have to see me again"
She looks at me for a moment before nodding and pulling her hood back up. Slightly relieved but still hurt I looked around once again. Dirty clothes and broken dishes and furniture lay everywhere. I went to the hole in the wall and looked out into the rain. We were pretty high up but right below us was a pile of trash and other discarded item's. I could hear the cries of birds and the air was a salty. We were probably by the ocean at this point...maybe there's something there that could help.
"I think our best bet is to head to the docks. It's not safe heading further into the city anyways" I said looking at Six. She nodded and pointed down at the pile glanced at me and then jumped. She didn't even wait like she used too. I shake my head a little then follow suit. The wind whistled in my ears and I landed on surprisingly soft bags. I crawled across the surface and landed on the wet pavement. This time Six let me lead and we made our way through the streets.
They were oddly quiet now. You couldn't hear the sound of static and muffled music, that had become the city's ambiance. The blue haze and heavy fog stayed the same however and I found it oddly comforting. I was very aware of Sixes presence beside me. Out of the corner of my eye I watched her. I remembered the small talk we would make before. Even that little interaction was better than this.
This stayed on my mind as we walked till I heard something. A skittering noise like tiny feet. Six heard it too and we both stopped. I scanned the buildings around us for signs of life but saw nothing. I was about to dissmiss it when I heard it again. This time behind us.
I noticed a stick nearby and in one quick movement I grabbed it and turned around swinging wildly. I didn't hit anything.
"Huh-?"
I heard a little whimper and looked down to find a pale gnome shaking with it's hands protecting it's face. I looked at Six in surprise and her face mirrored mine. I got down on my knees and held out a hand. The gnome flinched a little, still shaking.
"Hey buddy" I said gently. "Im sorry..come here I'm not gonna hurt you"
It looked up and me and slowly reached out. It took my hand and I smiled. I'd never seen one of these before. I wonder where they came from.
"Are you lost little guy?" I ask picking him up. He's about half my size and doesn't weigh much. He shakes his pointed head and reaches a tiny hand up to my wet hair. I let him touch it and I bet I looked stupid because I heard Six shuffle a laugh. I glanced at her and saw she had a small smile. But when she saw me look the smile disappeared. Damn it...
I set the gnome back down and it pulls my pant leg and points down a nearby ally way.
"You want us to follow you?" I ask. It nods and pulls again. I look at Six and she shrugs so I let it scurry ahead and follow close behind. It takes a bit to reach the end of the ally way but when we do the gnome huddles behind a trash bin. I was able to question why when I heard a familiar clicking noise.
Six grabbed my arm and pulled me behind the bin just in time. A viewer shambled past. It seems that without the static of the TV's to keep them occupied the viewers were now free to roam. Good for them but seriously bad for us. The gnome was small enough to sneak under the bin and we watched as it crossed to the other ally and hid.
"Guess we have to find another way" I whisper. "Have any ideas?"
Six peeks around the other side of the bin and points. I follow her gaze and see a metal grate connecting the buildings on either side. But right below it three viewers twitch and grone. We're gonna have to be careful. Alerting those things without a screen to distract them would be a very bad thing.
We sneak along the side of the building till we reach the ledge to a lower window. Six gives me a boost up and I catch the edge. Pulling myself up and reach down and pull her up as well. We continue to make our way up the side of the building using window sills and climbing on the clothes lines that connect the buildings. Finally we reached the metal grate.
This definitely would have been harder had the tower still been active. The buildings didn't warp and bend like before. Careful as could be we begin crossing. We made it about half way when the grate squeaked.
We stopped and both looked down to find the gooey twisted faces of the viewers peering back. They screamed in unison their glitching body's moving almost immediately.
"RUN!" I yell pulling Six after me. We took off sprinting, the noise was attracting more of them and looking down I could see them dog piling one another to reach us. We got across and i got ready to climb when hands grabbed the grate. The weight of all of them pulled it free.
Six, being faster than me, managed to climb to safety while I fell right on the face of a viewer. It tried to grab me but I punched the hole where it's eye would be. It reeled back screaming louder and I dropped. I hit the ground hard on my back almost nocking myself out. I didn't feel hurt though and rolled over into my feet.
I continued running and couldn't help but grin when Six dropped down and rolled to her feet next to me not missing a beat. Why is she so amazing sometimes? We reached the other side and the gnome motioned for us to follow. It was surprisingly quick with it's little legs and lead us to a storm drain. This wasn't in the ground though. It was much bigger and in the side of a brick building. We slipped through the bars just in time.
The glitching body's hit the bars but by them being so big they couldn't get in. We kept running when all of a sudden pain shot up my back. I fell to my hands and knees grunting. I didn't even care that the water I fell in smelled like everything it shouldn't and probably would give me hepatitis.
Six and the gnome rushed to my side. I felt Sixes hand touch my back and gasped in pain. She pulled her hand back and I could see blood. I must have messed myself up when I fell of the viewers face. Damn it this is not the time to be a wimp. I shake my head and take a deep breath wobbling to my feet.
Six watched me and I flashed her a smile."Im all good" I say wincing. She looks at me with such a deadpan look I kinda laughed. "Really im fine! Let's keep going" I turn to the gnome and he nods. We continue on for a while. I try to ignore the pain but it seems to be getting worse with every step.
Why do I always get beat up? Like dang gimmi a break I can only handle so much. And apparently this was my limit because one second im walking and the next my face hits that disgusting water and I'm out like a light.
