Philosophy class is always taught to a class of students from different courses in the university. Being considered a core subject, the administration always thought that it was best to let students mingle with others that do not carry the same ways of thinking or outputs of life.

And with it being a philosophy class, there is a lot of discussion periods. Emphasize on, a lot.

"Now," the philosophy professor with his receding hairline and wrinkly forehead, a clear indication of his years of dedication to his teaching profession, requests out loud to the class of 34 students, "I want you to discuss with your partner the thought of existentialism. What is existentialism in your own words? I'll give you 15 minutes, then I'll be randomly picking people to share what they discussed with their partner after the allotted time. You may start now."

Edith, a third year, health sciences major, clearly knows what that is. She understands the ethical theory and the inquiries behind it.

Though...she's not so sure if her seatmate would know it.

RJ, a marketing major, is not like her. He's active in class and gets along with people but is not always...the brightest bulb in the room.

"So!" RJ chirps, turning his torso to face his quiet seatmate, "Nice to have this discussion with you, Edith." He smiles at her and the girl could only twitch the corners of her lips upward for half a second before going back to her serious demeanor.

"Likewise. We have 15 minutes," Edith starts in a stern manner, clasping her hands together over her open notebook on her armchair. "First of all, would you know the main gist of existentialism?"

RJ scoffs. "Of course! It explores the problem of human existence and centers on the lived experience of the thinking, feeling, acting individual."

Edith narrows her eyes at him and shoot a look at his hand hiding beneath the table of her armchair. "You got that from Wikipedia, didn't you?"

The boy chuckles then raises his phone, showing the screen displaying the Google results on existentialism. "You got me." He places his phone in his pocket and whispers, "I apparently understand this definition more than the lecture."

Edith supresses rolling her eyes and, instead, decides to cut to the chase. If he won't give any good output, then she has to make sure that hers will be substantial in case they get called. "I'll start, then. I was surprised that sir never mentioned it yet, but I was thinking of the line, cogito ergo sum."

"Cogito what?"

"Cogito ergo sum," Edith repeats, matter of factly. "I think, therefore I am. Existentialists would find this as an absolute truth. It encompasses the whole inquiry of existentialism."

RJ nods and Edith hopes that he understands what she explained, even if it's just a bit of it.

He utters, taking Edith by surprise, "René Descartes."

Edith quirks a brow at him, growing impressed. "Y-Yes. I'm surprised you know him."

"I know what he stated in English," RJ explains, "I forgot the Latin equivalent of it."

"Well RJ, what do you have to add to our discussion on the thought of existentialism?"

RJ hums, his eyes darting up while he thinks. Then he snaps his fingers right in front of Edith's face as he has his eureka moment. "Dinosaurs," he exclaims all of a sudden.

Edith gets confused in an instant. Furrowing her brows, she asks, "What does dinosaurs have to do with existentialism?"

"I have always wondered how existentialism can also be seen in a non-human perspective," he answers, getting all excited.

"B-But it was made with only the human in mind-"

RJ cuts her off, "No, no, think about it. That thought could have been there millions of years ago. Dinosaurs still had their own thoughts because, first of all, they had brains, second, they had this hierarchy that they followed and dictated the way they acted around their fellow dinosaurs, and third, they had the ability to feel like how a small Velociraptor would get scared in the presence of a Tyrannosaurus Rex." He finishes and expectantly peers at Edith, hoping for a good response from her.

But she is still processing his words...for he may actually have a point. "So you're saying that the term 'existentialism' may have been developed in the 1800s, but the philosophy behind it could have been imprinted in the brains of creatures in the land before time?"

"Exactly! Also, great movie reference."

Edith breaks off into a soft laugh. "That's actually a cool thought," she admits.

"Right?! Oh my goodness, Edith, you have no idea how much I love dinosaurs!" RJ gushes, "I grew up watching different movies and reading books about them. I'm glad that I could finally share this with someone aside from my family."

The girl cocks her head to the side, puzzled. "Don't you share this with your friends? I always see you with those two guys around campus."

"Oh, my blockmates. Yeah," he drawls out unsurely, rubbing his nape, "I mean...they are my closest blockmates but it does not mean that I truly see them as...best friends. We're not that close."

"So, just acquaintances?" She inquires.

"That sounds mean."

"Well, it sounds exactly like it."

RJ chuckles softly. "Look at you going all smug."

"And look at you dodging the topic at hand," Edith shoots back with a hint of a smile on her face.

"What about you, then?" RJ asks, leaning forward. "Who do you hang out with?"

Edith gazes down at her notebook, turning shy and conscious as she tells him, "I spend most of my time studying. I do not really have a group of friends..."

He nods. "I'm not judging you on that."

The girl looks up in surprise and comes face-to-face with a soft smile gracing his features. "After all," he continues with a light shrug, "I would still like to be alone at most times."

"...I'm glad you understand."

"And as much as I understand, I respect it as well."

His words render her speechless. For the first time in college, Edith could not find what else to say. RJ's authenticity is something else, something she never expected from him.

"Okay," their professor announces in a loud voice, catching the attention of the whole class especially RJ and Edith, "15 minutes have passed!"

"It was nice talking with you. I felt at ease." RJ adjusts himself on his seat to get into a comfortable position. "Hopefully we'll have more discussions like this. I knew that you were a great seatmate." He widens his smile, causing Edith to genuinely smile back at him.

Same to you, RJ, she says in her head before breaking eye contact with his to look back at the blackboard in front, still keeping the smile on her face.
