“I utterly have no idea why he keeps on punishing me like this,” Lea grumbles under her breath, keeping her eyes closed as her roommate continues to place mascara on her eyelashes.

“Lea, this is no punishment, it’s David’s birthday!” Ina placates. She takes a look at the mirror in front of her to check how Lea looks then proceeds to go back to placing a bit more mascara.

Celine, their third roommate adds, “He’s turned 21 today. That’s a big thing for men since that is basically them entering the legal age.” She watches Ina begin to work on Lea’s eyebrows.

Lea mutters under her breath, “Like as if David hasn’t been doing dangerous things before today.” When she feels the bristles of a small brush on her eyebrows, her eyes fly open in shock. “Hey! I told you not to place that much make-up on me!” 

Ina whines, “Come on, Lea! I want to make your eyebrows look nice as well. Also, Celine and I want you to look nice for David.”

The girl huffs, “I’m already wearing a dress the two of you bought for me. Even if I look ‘nice’, David won’t notice. We grew up together, he knows what I look like already.”

“But we want you to look extra pretty tonight!”

Lea scoffs and Celine continues with the urging, “Also, don’t you find it romantic that he invited you over to a family dinner at your favorite restaurant? He wants to spend his birthday with you!”

“Celine, there is nothing romantic about spending dinner with his family. They know me, I know them. How about you focus on whatever you have with Matthias-”

“T-There is nothing going on between Matthias and me,” Celine stutters, then pouts at her. “Lea, you’re mean. I hate it when you place me in the hot seat.”

Lea smirks and looks at herself in the mirror. “What can I say? I could be witty sometimes.”

“More like, all the time,” Celine breathes out. She clears her throat then continues, “I have to leave in a few minutes. Matthias wants to meet up again at the library.” She stands and grabs her bag and laptop from her desk.

Ina announces out loud, "I think I'm done!" She and Celine look at Lea through the mirror and she smiles at her finished output. "Lea, don't you feel a bit more excited now?" 

Lea nonchalantly shrugs. "Excited, bored, whatever you want me to feel." 

Ina dismisses her roommate's comment with a wave of her hand and carries on with combing Lea's hair. "How will you go to the restaurant?" 

"I might take a cab," Lea answers. "David wanted to fetch me here at the dorm but I declined." 

"What?!" Celine exclaims, "that would have been romantic!" Ina vehemently nods in agreement. 

"I told the two of you that there is nothing romantic between David and me. Don't expect anything like that. Now finish up my hair or whatever, it would be rude if I arrive late, right?"

“Lea, you’re here! Guys, Lea is here!” David announces, causing his family members to wildly cheer and welcome the overwhelmed girl to their table. 

“Hi…” suddenly turning shy, she tries to greet everyone back but David’s mother stands to hug her, his father takes her hand to shake it, and one of his brothers even ruffles her hair.
