Visit by a Valentine

I’m currently cooking boxed mac and cheese for my son and I.

It’s Valentine’s Day night but my husband, Yuan, is away serving the military.

He’s been gone for five months and won’t be home for another six months.

It’s making me terribly upset that we can’t spend Valentine’s Day or Valentine’s Night together.

While my son plays with his toys in the living room, I sing loudly to the music on the radio and try to push the sad thought out of my head.

I heard my son run over and he tugs on my pants, getting my attention.

“Mommy!” he calls, looking up at me.

I smile and lean down to his level.

“What’s wrong, baby?” I look at him, kissing his nose and tousling his hair.

He takes on Yuan’s features for the most part, having his dark brown eyes and dark hair, along with the shape of their mouths being the same.

“Daddy!” he tugs on my leg again.

He knows to call me mommy, so he’s not getting us confused.

I realized that he’s trying to tell me that he misses Yuan. Before Yuan left for the military, our son would play with him all the time and he misses him dearly every day.

I leaned down and caress my son’s small face.

“Baby, I miss your daddy too. Just six more months, okay?”

He shakes his head and repeats “Daddy!”

I frown and turn back to the stove, continuing to cook dinner.

My son waddles off to the foyer and I heard him yell “Daddy!” once again.

I heard a hushing sound and my heart drops, knowing that my son and I are no longer the only one in the house.

My motherly instinct kicks in and I quickly creep around the corner to see who is in the house.

I drop the wooden spoon to the floor in shock when my eyes land on the mystery man.

Before my very eyes, my husband stands in his green military uniform, hugging our squeaking son.

As soon as the wooden spoon falls, Yuan looks up, a huge smile plastered across his face. He sets our son down, standing up straight.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, beautiful!”

“Yuan!” I sob and laugh, sprinting over to my husband.

Our son giggles, sensing my excitement. My arms wrap around Yuan’s shoulder and my legs wrap around his waist as he supports me, laughing and squeezing me tight.

“I miss you, I love you hon!”

“I miss you and I love you too hon” Yuan’s hands hold my back as tears roll down my cheeks.

“I’ve missed you so much” we both say at the same time, not letting go of each other.

“How did you- When did you- I thought you-“I failed to complete my sentences, leaning back in his arms and hold his face in my hands.

“We were allowed to come home for a few days to see our wives and girlfriends” he grins and sets me down.

I attack him with another hug and he chuckled.

“You’re okay? You’re safe? You’re still in one piece?” I run my hands down his arms and hold his face once again, tears of joy rolling down my cheeks.

“Yes, hon. I’m completely fine” he nods, wiping my tears.

“I think I need to inspect you really good tonight just to make sure” I smirk, patting his chest.

“Hey, watch the profanity in front of the best little dude in the whole world!” Yuan leans down, allowing our son to attack him with hugs and giggles once again.

I sit with them on the couch, both my son and I curled up to Yuan’s side, just as we used to do all the time.

I take in Yuan’s features, missing each tiny details of his face way too much.
While Yuan plays with our son, I take the food off of the stove, knowing that it’s done.

I heard Yuan said something to our son and he runs up the stairs excitedly. My husband comes over to where I am.

“What’s this?” he holds me from behind swaying us back and forth.

I felt his lips press into my neck a few times, making me smile.

“Valentine’s dinner!” I laugh and display it in front of us.

“Fuck that, I’m taking you guys out to eat” Yuan laughs, hugging me tightly.

I turned around and connect our lips, sharing our first kiss in five months.

Our lips move in sync until we’re interrupted by our son.

“Ew!” he shouts, making us laugh.

I enjoyed hearing Yuan’s laugh, considering the joyous sound hasn’t filled our house in so long.

This is a Valentine’s Day that I’ll never forget.
