MOMENTS AWAY FROM PROMISED freedom, the emergency doors to the dorm room slammed shut with a resounding ring. The teenagers inside—packing their things in a flurry—stood to a halt as they stared at the previous exit. They had been trapped inside the mountain for more than a month, but now there were only four walls and a roof squeezing in tighter as seconds ticked by.
⠀⠀⠀Casey felt her chest tighten, her eyes glaze over, and the blood rushed to her head, making her feel as light as a feather. She sat on the end of her bed, unable to look anywhere but at the door. Jasper rushed to them, slamming his hands against the metal, while Casey watched as their slim hope vanished.
⠀⠀⠀Chaos ensued. Panicked teenagers raging around the room in a desperate attempt to find an exit, but there was no exit. Mount Weather was a fortified government building built nearly two hundred years prior and had withstood the first nuclear war. It would survive forty children trying to claw their way out with nothing but their hands.
