Day 4 at the hospital

Derek woke up first and admired his wife an daughter, both sleeping peacefully next to him. They looked so...relaxed. Zola was sleeping in her mother's arms, wrapped protectively.

He then let his eyes wander down to her battered arm. It was now in a very supportive, protective black sling and under that was a firm cast. It reminded Derek of the one Burke had worn when he got shot.

He grabbed her chart on the side table and thumbed through it. He read the notes Nelson took. "Extensive nerve damage." It said. Derek grimaced at that and kept reading. Everything else seemed pretty normal.

It was around 8 o'clock, so Derek decided to take Zola out of Merediths arms and bring her to daycare. They have been changing her recently ever since the crash, so he took her straight there. With a kiss goodbye, Derek went back to his wife's room where rounds had already started in the 10 minutes he was gone.

"Good morning." Derek said to the doctors as he made his way through to Meredith, who was woken up. "Morning." He said quietly to Meredith. "Morning." She replied as he bent down and kissed her gently. "Okay Grey. We're gonna get you standing up and walking around. It shouldn't be too difficult, but with the arm it may be. Torres also wants to see your range of motion with that arm as well." Bailey said.

Several doctors left, leaving Bailey, Torres, Derek, and of course, Meredith. "How's everyone else?" Meredith asked. "Mark and Lexie are both good. Mark was fine, Lexie will need some PT for her leg but it should be okay. Cristina is...not mentally here. Owen said they're gonna commit her to psych if she doesn't talk soon. Arizona is good too. Just a dislocated plate in her back." Callie explained.

"Cristina has ptsd?" Meredith asked in surprise. "She does." Callie said. "I'm going to see her later." Meredith said firmly. "Grey-" "I'm going to see her." As She interrupted Bailey. "Okay." She said with a sigh. "Alright Grey, you know the drill. Swing your legs over, and Callie is gonna hold your arm to make sure it doesn't move too much." Bailey instructed.

Meredith nodded and swung her legs over with ease. Callie had a firm, supportive hand on her arm. "Shepherd, get over here." Bailey said. Derek walked over and stood in front of Meredith. "Now, put your hands on his shoulders and carefully slide off the bed." She said.

Meredith did so, also with ease, but when she accidentally moved her arm, she hissed in pain. "Easy, Grey." Bailey warned. "Take a few steps if you can. I'll hold your arm the whole time." Callie said softly. Meredith took a few small steps. She didn't like the feeling of not being able to use her arm.

Once they got Meredith back into her bed, Bailey left, leaving Callie, Derek and Meredith. "Now, I want to test your range of motion, so I'm going to take off the sling; okay?" Callie asked. The two nodded and Callie carefully undid the sling while Derek supported her arm and gently put it down on the pillow. Derek could tell without the sling it was really starting to bother her.

"Grey, hold your arm up for as long as you can without that much pain, okay?" She asked. Meredith nodded and moved her arm in the air. It hurt like hell. Her arm was shaking. "Okay. Put it down, and just wiggle your fingers for me please." Callie requested. Derek helped Meredith bring her arm down on the pillow and she slowly moved her fingers up and down.

"Okay. Looks good Grey. Take this-" Callie said as she handed her a squishy ball, which Derek and Meredith both recognized as a PT ball. "and squeeze it whenever you can. It'll help the nerves fix themselves." She finished. Callie helped put her sling back on. "Okay. Thanks Callie." Meredith said with a small smile. "Anytime Grey. Take care of yourselves." Callie said before leaving the room.

"How you feeling?" Derek asked quietly. "It hurts." Meredith said as the tears started to fall. Derek climbed into bed beside her and held her. "What if I can't operate again?" She asked as sobs wracked her body. "You will. I'll make sure of it." He said softly. Derek pressed a call button discreetly and waited for a nurse to come in.

Instead of a nurse, Bailey came in again and frowned when she saw her sobbing intern. "Pain meds." Derek mouthed to her. She nodded in understanding and left briefly to get some drugs.

When she came back, she quickly injected them into Merediths iv and she instantly relaxed and fell asleep. Bailey took a seat next to her bed as wel and grabbed her hand. It hurt to see her intern, who much in a way had been like a daughter to her, in so much pain. Bailey may have been hard core and uncaring on the outside, but on the inside, she cared deeply for her interns as if they were her own children.

"She's a tough one, Shepherd. She'll be alright." Bailey said. "If she can't operTe, she'll lose herself." Derek whispered sadly. "She will operate. And remember; you have your beautiful little girl. She'll need her to get her through this." Bailey said. "Thanks." Derek said. "No problem Shepherd." Bailey said as she stood up and left
