One week later, Meredith woke up and high tailed it to the bathroom. She bent over the toilet and emptied her stomach. The morning sickness was hitting hard. Meredith wasn't sure how far along she was, but she guessed around 8 weeks. Their OB appointment was scheduled for a few days though.
Derek woke up to the sound of retching. He sleepily got out of bed and his heart broke when he saw Meredith bent over the toilet throwing up. He knelt down next to her and rubbed her back soothingly. "Der." She whimpered. "You're okay. I'm here, I got you." He said softly.
Meredith finished minutes later and collapsed in his arms. "We don't have to meet with thatcher for a few hours. Let's get some sleep." He said quietly. He lifted her into his arms, careful to avoid her arm and carried her back to their bed. He put her down and tucked her in before climbing in behind her.
About an hour later, Meredith woke up again. She stood up carefully and walked downstairs to the smell of pancakes, something Meredith didn't know she was craving until she smelt them. "Hi." She said as she wrapped her arms around dereks midsection. "Good morning. You feeling okay?" He asked lovingly. Meredith nodded and walked over to Zola.
"Mama." Zola said with a happy smile. "Hi baby girl." She said as she kissed her forehead. "Callie is going to pick her up soon and then we'll head out." Derek said as he put pancakes in front of his two favorite girls.
They ate and before they knew it, Callie had arrived to pick up Zola. "Bye Zozo, we'll see you later." Meredith said as she held her and kissed her head before handing the baby back to Zola.
After Callie had taken Zola, Meredith and Derek got into the car and headed to thatchers. Meredith had called him briefly and told him she needed to talk and he agreed. "Nervous?" Derek asked as he reached over the console and grabbed her hand. "A little bit." Meredith admitted. "It's okay. I'll be with you the whole time." He promised softly.
They arrived at thatchers small house he bought and they hesitantly entered. "Meredith, is that you?" Thatcher asked as he walked over to the door. He smiled when he saw her. "Hi." He said awkwardly. "Uh, hi." Meredith replied. "Hi, Derek Shepherd. I don't know if you remember me but we met a few years ago." Derek said with a smile as he gave thatcher a firm handshake.
"Come sit down." Thatcher said as he led them into his living room. They sat down, Meredith and Derek on the couch, thatcher across from them on his other couch. "So, how have you been?" Thatcher asked hesitantly. "Um, okay." Meredith replied as she grabbed dereks hand for support. "I-I heard about your daughter. Lexie showed me a picture, she's gorgeous." Thatcher complimented with a kind smile.
"Oh, thank you." Meredith said as her eyes lit up at talk about her daughter. "How old is she now?" He asked. "Almost 2 years old." Derek replied proudly. "That's great. I remember when you were two, you always stumbled around the hospital with your little anatomy Jane doll." Thatcher said with a nervous chuckle.
"What happened to your arm?" Thatcher asked, seeming to be slightly concerned much to Merediths surprise. "Uh, that's actually w-why I'm here." Meredith stammered as she swallowed hard. "I- in the crash my nerves were damaged in my arm. And Lexie was going to donate but she couldn't...." Meredith trailed off.
"And you want me to donate?" Thatcher guessed. "I would- we would never ask, but-" "Yes. She may not be able To operate again and get full function without a live nerve transplant." Derek cut in, much to Merediths relief. "I-ill get tested. You saved my life when I didn't owe you anything. What would the-the procedure be?" Thatcher asked. Merediths eyes raised in surprise and looked at Derek, who had a soft smile on his face.
"Uh, they would cut into your leg and take some nerve from there. If there's not enough in one leg, they'd go into the other leg." Derek explained. "Okay. When should I get tested?" Thatcher asked. "As soon as possible." He replied. "How about I come in tomorrow? Would that work?" Thatcher asked. "Yes, it would. Thank you." Meredith replied genuinely. "You deserve it Meredith." He said.
They chatted for a while and caught up before Meredith and Derek left the house and drove back home.
"He actually said yes." Meredith said in shock. "He did. I told you." Derek said with a smile. "Let's just see if he's even a match." Meredith said. Derek nodded and smiled.
They drove to the hospital to pick up some papers and to pick up Zola. Derek went to go grab his stuff, while Meredith Met Callie at the nurses station. Callie put Zola on the counter so it would be easier for Meredith to pick her up and left.
"Hi zo." Meredith gushed as she looked at her daughter. "Let's go meet daddy." She whispered. Meredith then had a predicament. She had a briefcase and a daughter to carry with one arm. "We need daddy." Meredith sighed to her daughter.
Meredith chatted quietly to Zola until Derek showed up. "There's my two favorite girls." Derek said with a smile as he walked over. "Da!" Zola exclaimed as she reached for her father. Derek lifted her up along with his briefcase, and gave a sad smile to Meredith. "I know." He murmured to her as he kissed her softly.
They got home and for the rest of the night they cuddled together and played with Zola. It was a success at the end of the day.
