Day 5 in the hospital
After Bailey pushed the pain meds the previous night, Meredith slept soundly all night. Derek had actually gone home that night to get a good nights sleep and grab some things, like toiletries and extra blankets.
When he arrived back at the hospital, Meredith was still asleep, so he took the time to privately talk to her doctors. "When do you think she'll be out of here?" He asked. "In a few days. I don't see any other reason to keep her other than her arm." Bailey replied. "Yeah, and we can't do much for her arm until that incision heals and we can open her up again. She may need a nerve transplant though, I won't lie." Callie replied.
"A nerve transplant?" Derek exclaimed in shock. "The nerve damage was extensive, Derek. Do you know what happened out there?" Bailey asked. "I think her arm was stuck in a piece of the plane. And somehow she got it out. I-I'm entirely sure." He replied. "Damn." Callie said. "When should we start PT?" Derek questioned.
"Probably in a week or two after you go home. We need to make sure the nerves are somewhat intact before she does anything." Callie replied. Derek nodded. "Okay. I'm gonna go check in with my family." He said before leaving.
"What are the chances she'll operate again?" Bailey asked quietly. "65%." Callie replied. "It's that bad?" Bailey asked. "It's bad." She whispered. "Poor girl. Cant get a break." Bailey muttered before walking away.
Lexie and Mark had both been moved to a smaller room just for the two of them. Mark woke up in the small bed, but smiled. Lexie was curled in his arms, sleeping peacefully next to him. Mark spent this time, admiring his girlfriends features. He knew he wasn't going to let her slip away again. This was for real.
Cristina was still unresponsive, and If she didn't speak by the end of today, they would move her up to psych. Owen tried his hardest, but he knew the only person that would make her talk was pretty injured. But he would try anyways.
Arizona was feeling pretty good. She gets to go home today; just with a lot painkillers and rest. Callie and Sofia were with her the whole time.
Back in Merediths room a half an hour later, she woke up to dereks dreamy gaze. "Good morning." He whispered as he pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Morning." Meredith replied with a soft smile. "How are you feeling today?" He asked as he smoothed out her hair. "Not bad." She replied. "Zola?" Meredith asked. "In daycare." Derek said. Meredith nodded. "Can I sit somewhere else? My back hurts." Meredith asked.
Derek nodded and helped her out of bed, careful to avoid her arm. They got to the couch and Meredith sighed in relief. "Better?" He asked. "Better." She agreed as she cuddled into his side, nuzzling her nose into his neck.
"Meredith." A desperate voice called drom the door. They looked up and saw Owen with a pleading look on his face. "What?" Mereditj asked. "Can you try to talk to Cristina? They're gonna send her to psych if she doesn't talk by tonight." Owen begged. "Sure." Mereditj replied. "Mer-" Derek started to argue. "Derek, can you get me a wheelchair?" Meredith asked. He sighed but nodded and quickly came back with a wheelchair.
After getting her settled into it, Derek and Meredith and Owen all made their way down the hall, ignoring the Pity looks they were getting. "This one." Owen said. "You two stay out here." Meredith said as she stood up with dereks helps.
She walked in slowly and stood next to Cristinas bed. She had a blank look on her face, just staring at the ceiling. She leaned over the bed so her face was in Cristinas. "Cristina, you have to wake up. Or else there gonna pump you full of antipsychotics and your gonna go slack jawed in the cuckoos nest." Meredith begged as she placed her good hand on her best friends face.
"Cristin, say something now." Meredith said firmly. Cristinas eyes drifted to Merediths and they made eye contact. "Cristina, wake up. I'm gonna hit you in a minute." Meredith threatened. Nothing. Meredith sighed, and slapped Cristina right across the face. Cristina, as if she had been snapped out of a trance, moved her head, her eyes darting frantically.
"What the hell was that for?" She asked. "Your back." Meredith said in relief. She waved Owen and Derek in and they both entered. "What happened?" Cristina asked. "The plans crash. You were in shock." Owen replied softly. "And you hit me?" Cristina asked sarcastically. Owen and Derek looked at Meredith, who had a sheepish look on her face.
"It got her awake!" Mereditj defended. "I'll get you back for that." Cristina promised. They talked for a little while after Derek made Meredith go back her room.
"Did you really hit her?" Derek asked quietly as they relaxed on the couch. Meredith nodded. "It was with my left hand, it can't have hurt that bad!" Merediths claimed with a smile. He chuckled. "Derek?" She asked. "Yeah?" Derek replied. "When can I get out of here?" She asked. "I talked to Bailey and Callie this morning. They both said probably in a few days. But you won't be coming to work for a while." He replied.
"I probably can't work for a while." She muttered under her breath. "Hey." Derek said firmly. "You most likely wont be able to operate for a while, but you can do other things. Like you can still round on patients, teach interns maybe, we can try to get you a class at a university or soemtning. You will be back to work at some point." He said softly as he lifted her chin up and kissed her.
"Okay." Meredith whispered. "Okay." He parroted.
