"Crookshanks?" Katarina inquired.
"I think it's a cute nickname," Remus agreed with Sirius's opinion.
"Well then Crookshanks it shall be," James declared.
"Hey! I didn't get a say in this at all," Katarina exclaimed.
"Doesn't matter, it has been declared. No takebacks," Sirius patted Katarina.
"But-" Katarina was cut off as the boys had moved on from the conversation.
--
The boys had been adamant about her new nickname, disputing any attempt to tear away the nickname from herself. Katarina had found that afternoon tiresome and futile, the following day was the same.
"Don't you think it's a bit unpractical, I mean aren't nicknames supposed to be short for someone's actual name?" Katarina protested, "Crookshanks is three letters longer than my name!"
"It's sad to see that that you've adapted the horrendous nicknames those plonkers use," Severus sneered.
Severus was worse than usual, though it was evident he was still bitter about the whole fight earlier that week.
"Shut it Snivillus before a pound my fist on your abnormally large nose again," Sirius threatened, Remus quickly shot a glance at Sirius issuing him to back down.
Severus's face turned a bright red before paying attention to his potions book once more. Professor Slughorn was clearly displeased with certain student's lack of academic achievements in his class and thought it fit to have a group assignment. The assigned tables were to work cohesively on one potion, this class he had assumed it wise to let the already rampaging fifth years work on the Invigoration Draught together.
"Let us begin, remember should you have any issues preparing the potion, do not hesitate to inquire for my assistance," Slughorn gestured.
It was rather peaceful at first as they had collectively and quietly followed the instructions the potions book. Soon enough as the group across the classroom had misbrewed part of their potion Professor Slughorn placed his attention on them, letting the following chaos at Katarina's table ensue.
"You have to shake the brewed mandrake first!" exclaimed Severus attempting to grab the vile of brewed mandrake from Sirius.
"Nowhere on this potions book does it say it needs to shaken you greasy fool," Sirius yelled, refusing to let go of the vile.
"Black will you stop being so stubborn and let Severus do what he's best at. Lord knows what'll happen if you touch his potion," Malfoy insisted.
"Sirius is right though, we shouldn't stray from the directions," Remus added.
"If it is shaken it'll be more effective!" Snape snarled forcefully tugging away from Sirius.
"How do we know you're not just trying to screw us all!?" Sirius yelled.
"Why the bloody hell would I do that!?" Severus exasperated his whole head had turned a violent red.
"Clearly you're still salty about the duel!" Sirius pulled hard, the cork of the vile popped off as the vile of brewed mandrake poured into the cauldron.
"What have you two done!?" Katarina screamed, the amount that was added to the potion was astronomically greater than they had needed.
A cloud of smoky green mist poured from the Cauldron as it bubbled violently. Professor Slughorn dashed to the scene from the commotion they had caused. A blob of blue gooey substance popped from the Cauldron landing on Professor Slughorn's face. The potion boiled harder by the minute and a sudden boom could be heard across the class. The cauldron had exploded with pieces of the potion could be seen all over the classroom and on the student's robes.
"All five of you, see me after class," Professor Slughorn stated wiping the goo off his suit and face.
So much for getting on Professor Slughorn's good side.
--
"What on god's earth were you thinking?" Slughorn buried his face in his palms being absolutely done with the five fifth years in front of him.
"If I may Professor, it was mostly caused by Black," Malfoy and Severus glared at the black-haired Gryffindor.
"Me!? It was Severus who insisted straying from the book instructions!" Sirius yelled.
"It would have been more effective," Severus countered.
"Enough!" Slughorn slammed his fist on the counter before realizing his rising temper, he coughed and pretended to fix his bow tie.
"Clearly it seems to be between Sirius and Severus, I shall not put the three of you in any repercussions for their actions" Slughorn looked at the three with empathy before turning to the other two, "you two on the other hand have got into more and more incidents as of late. I will be expecting the two of you in detention this Saturday."
"But sir, it's Quidditch tryouts this Saturday!" Sirius cried out.
"Well Mr.Black I hope you will think ahead next time," Slughorn looked as though he was about to burst.
Sirius promptly stayed quiet in fear that something of greater value be taken away from him.
"I do regret to take your time, do pretend this never occurred," Slughorn directed his attention to Malfoy, Katarina, and Remus.
"Thank you, Professor, we will take our leave now," The three left promptly.
"I didn't Quidditch tryouts were this weekend," Katarina mentioned.
"Do you play?" Remus asked inquisitively.
"I play but, I'm not good enough to join the team," Katarina smiled sheepishly.
Katarina had enjoyed flying but she was never as good as Teddy or anyone of the other Quidditch players in her House. Teddy had attempted to coach Katarina to get better at the sport but, she supposed sports were just not her forte. Katarina had since given up her dreams of being a Quidditch player and instead had paid more attention to her academics.
"Sirius and James are the House chasers," Remus explained.
"Do you play?" Katarina inquired. She had assumed teddy had gotten his sportive behavior from his father.
"No, it feels a bit ostracizing though. Both my best friends are on the team and it's something they bond over all the time. I suppose I feel left out a lot, it kind of relieves me that you don't play," Remus smiled sadly.
It was then that Katarina realized just how much she and Remus had in common, she had never met an individual so much like her. Maybe turning back time wasn't so bad after all.
