River emerged into the clearing out the front of Emily's house with Embry and Quil by her side, and Bella still hitching riding on her back. The human kept a good hold on her, using her thighs to keep a gripped balance and her hands to steady her swaying.

As they walked across the clearing, Jared pulled up in the driveway in Bella's old, light-red truck, parking just in front of the cozy building where the porch was.

Bella gripped her fur even tighter. "Hey, I think we should go see if Jacob's okay..."

River wrinkled her nose when she felt another flash of heat go through her body. She desired nothing more than to get rid of this human from her back and just go lay down in the shade of her den. River hoped this will be a quick conversation.

"I hope Paul sinks some teeth into him," Embry said, grinning. "Serves him right."

"No way!' Quil shook his head. "Jake's a natural. Did you see him phase on a fly?"

Bella loosened her grip on River and the werepuma could smell the human's concern and astonishment at their lack of compassion for their friend. With a rumble, River leaned down and let Bella slip off her back and onto her feet. River didn't want to carry Bella around longer than she needed to.

The human girl turned around to glance at River for a moment, eyes wide and uncertain. "You can speak, right? Or was that just another hallucination?"

Hallucination? River flicked her ear absentmindedly. "I can." She decided not to question it.

Bella flinched slightly, probably recalling their first encounter that dreadfully cold night all those moons ago. "Y-yeah."

The boys had gone inside Emily's home first, bickering with each other as they shoved themselves through the open door. The smell of something sweet was coming from inside. Emily always had something cooked up for them. These young werewolves were always hungry.

Bella moved to follow them, but River stepped in front of her, blocking the human with her side.

"A small piece of advice," River began, peering down at her. "About Sam's mate, Emily? Don't stare."

"Why would I stare?"

River didn't reply. She only turned her head to let out a sneeze before moving away.

Bella frowned as she watched the werepuma leap her way back up the slope and into the forest without saying another word. It was as if River didn't want to waste her time explaining anything and just left Bella to figure it out on her own.

Fleeing from her thoughts, Bella walked inside the house. The foyer led her straight into the dining room and kitchen. Embry and Quil were already at the table, stuffing their faces into huge muffins. There was a woman, too, with her back turned to Bella as she was sorting out groceries.
