RIVER LET OUT a long-awaited breath, taking a step back and accidentally bumping into Dimitri who had perched himself behind her in case she had decided to try and make a run for it. Though, despite his thoughtful decision, she was in too much of a shock to really notice him at all. River couldn't believe it. The vampire before her was the same one who she couldn't kill that night, no matter how much she wanted to for his transgressions against her former tribe.

She did not dare tear her eyes away from his. River had thought of him for years since they had last seen each other over a century ago, always having that dull ache in her heart gripping her tightly. Many times River had gone to see the kahuna for it. Many times they had brushed it off as nothing. Her brother, Skiafros, would always like to suggest jokingly that perhaps she had hit her head a bit too hard that night, and she'd always tell him to choke on dirt in return. Now, after so many hopeless years, River knew why.

The ache was completely gone now as she stood in Marcus' presence. She felt better than she had in years! For the first time for so long, she felt young and nimble and...

River finally tore herself away from Marcus' gaze to see Edward and Bella huddling together on the marble floor, and then to Alice who was being restrained roughly by Felix in order to stop her from interfering. River blinked out of her dazed state, feeling more of a helpless fool than she had been before.

Alice looked a little guilty, biting her lip as she looked River's way, and the werepuma then understood the real reason why Alice insisted for her to go with them to Volterra.

Aro decided to intervene then, pulling away from Caius to hold out a single, pale hand towards his bond brother. "If you will, Marcus?"

Marcus didn't look away from River as he gave his hand to Aro, his eyes trailing over carefully, taking in every detail. The darker-haired king took in all of Marcus' thoughts eagerly all in the meantime.

Behind them, River could hear Caius fuming out of impatience, a clear rumble in his chest building towards a growl. He was about to speak but Aro let go of Marcus' hand and looked at River, his jovial disposition shifting into one of absolute surprise. His intimidating and flamboyant radiance he held the entirety of River's time in the throne room had dissipated and was replaced with an eerie, yet calm quietness as his crimson eyes scanned over her form. He looked at every part of her he could, from the hair on her head to the shape of her bare feet on the cold marble, as if he were checking for any scuffs or marks on his most prized possession – like she was his life essence that most definitely shouldn't be harmed.

Unnerved, River would have taken another hesitant step back if Dimitri hasn't been there to harshly grip her shoulders. A warning growl rose up within Marcus' throat and Dimitri immediately let go and stepped away.

Fast as lightning, the snow-blonde vampire king must have gotten impatient and sped over between his bond brothers to see what the fuss was about. It only took a moment for him to meet River's eyes, and his own dark maroon ones were completely mesmerized, and his shoulders relaxed.
