HOURS HAD GONE by, and as the time passed the more Bella had become more distressed at the intruding reality that they were racing against time to save Edward from getting himself killed. It was when they arrived at the airport, and Alice had somehow managed to get River onto the plane without a passport or ID, that River had sunk into her plane seat in the frightening realisation that she had willingly climbed into a giant machine that flew thousands of feet in the air. It was something she wouldn't have even spoke of herself ever doing. Crowds, even in a plane where nobody had to speak to anyone, made her uneasy.
Sensing her anxiety, Alice had sat beside her and comfortingly squeezed River's hand until the plane had steadied itself in the air after take-off and she could breathe normally again. Once the plane had landed hours later, River was extremely grateful. She had been stiff as a board the last hour of the plane ride when the machine had hit turbulence.
When they exited the airport in Pisa, Bella had practically leaped into the front seat of a modern, bright-yellow vehicle that Alice had managed to acquire within such a short amount of time. River was impressed by the vampire's connections, though she supposed someone that could live forever in human society would have some.
As they drove, Alice informed both Bella and River more on the Volturi. River knew the basics, such as that they were a large vampire coven that governed the vampire world; their prime goal ensuring that their kind remained a secret. However, what River wasn't aware of was that the leaders of the coven were three ancient kings: Aro, Marcus, and Caius. All three of them were thousands of years old. The vampires after them that were considered of higher class consisted of the guard: Jane, Jane's twin Alec, Felix, and Dimitri. Then there were the ones that were practically the underlings. Alice didn't say their names. Perhaps they were too unimportant for her to remember.
The werepuma began to feel uneasy when Alice warned them of Jane's power to inflict illusions of pain and Alec's disturbing ability to numb the senses of his victims. It sounded like something all three of them would most like to avoid today. Alice told them of the others' powers, too, such as Dimitri's insane tracking abilities and Aro's power to witness a person's every thought and memory with a single touch. Though, none of these powers seemed to impress River more than Alice's. Seeing visions of the future was extraordinary. Clearly, River didn't realise that it was possible for creatures other than werepuma's to inherit such a gift.
As Alice drove the car along a long road which was approaching a looming city looked as if it were made of sandstone, River noted to herself that she would have to make sure to be careful around these vampires. She didn't remember much from a brief meeting with them over a century ago, only the chaos that occurred on that dreadful, snowy day. River and her tribe had left as quickly as the Volturi had come to fight those lycanthropes.
River shivered at the horrific memories of those savage creatures.
As they were getting closer to the city, Bella seemed to finally start losing it, gripping her hair tightly and bouncing her leg rapidly. Though, despite her obvious panic, the human tried to keep calm by talking.
