No one spoke. For what seemed to be hours, all of them were just waiting for something to happen. The fireflies that danced around River's paws were the only ones without expectation. From the blank darkness of the woods, through the looming pines and huge moss-covered boulders, all the ever-so familiar noises of the night were heard – the long, nameless note of a distant coyote; the silly pulsing shrill of tireless insects in the trees; strange cries of night birds and the drone of blundering beetles.

When the noises suddenly ceased, River's shoulders tensed up and the fur along her spine prickled as she pushed through the silence to detect a sound she had been searching for. Around her, the Cullen's also went as still as stone – not that they weren't already, but the change was still evident – also waiting intently for a sound, or at least, for Alice Cullen's signal.

Vampires weren't the only ones in River's company tonight. Kopa stood rigid beside her, his orange-tinted pelt not so impressive in this dark scene, not like it usually was in the bright sunlight. It was obvious, judging by his twitching claws and ears, that he was also determined to detect the same sound everyone was searching for, or, again, at least wait for Alice's vision to come into fruition.

"Are you sure this is where you saw her?" Carlisle Cullen, the leader and eldest vampire of the small vampire coven, asked Alice. He was a handsome man. Had neat, thick blonde locks, pale and flawless complexion, and golden eyes that swirled like warm honey. There was something strangely comforting about him that River sort of liked.

River felt Kopa's flank brush along hers, and she barely acknowledged the young werepuma with a flick of her tail. She didn't dare tear her eyes away from the forest around them, though. She had to concentrate on capturing and hopefully putting an end to Victoria.

"She's almost here," Alice reassured, frowning at something in the foggy distance of her sight. Something that only she could see. The silence was almost suffocating. Everyone had gone quiet after that.

Anticipation rushed through River like a typhoon. She recalled the night Alice had come to visit her in her cave only days beforehand – since her den was in the lands between both Cullen and Quileute territories – asking for River's help in tracking down and finishing Victoria. Of course, River wasn't doing it for her. That red-haired bloodsucker had tried to poison River in the woods and was actively trying to find ways to get her hands on Bella Swan, the human girl who, for some reason, always needed saving.

River recalled Victoria's scent in the forest when she first started to continuously run into Bella. Whenever she'd patrol the borders of Quileute territory or beyond, the vampire's scent was always lingering. She was after Bella, everyone knew that. From what Alice had told her, Victoria wanted revenge for the death of her mate, James, who Edward had killed the year before in order to protect Bella. It was now an eye-for-an-eye situation.
