THE SKY BEGAN to let down sprinkles of rain quickly enough, and Jacob had carried a shaking Bella to her vehicle nearby, parked under the shade of a tall pine tree. He would be taking her home to get dry and warm as Sam had ordered; thankfully this time Jacob seemed eager to follow his alpha's commands.

The wind of an incoming rainstorm blew itself coldly against River's drenched pelt making her shiver. A sniffle beside her caught River's attention, and she was reminded of the new responsibility she had as a mentor.

"I showed you where my den is, Kopa," River said, turning her blue gaze to his small, wet form. She knew it was best he got out of the rain that was coming, especially after jumping into the freezing ocean. "I want you to return to it. Get yourself dry and warm inside. Don't bother marking the territory on the way, the storm coming will just erase your scent."

Kopa seemed to be hesitant. "What about you?" he asked, peering up at her with wide, golden eyes. He looked so small before her, drenched with salt water and rain, shivering where he stood in the sand, clearly exhausted from fighting against the current.

River felt a sense of great uncertainty at the sight of him. She hadn't considered his wellbeing entirely yet, and the guilt of it was biting at her. Kopa had only just arrived and already he was made to leap off cliffs and into the sea, become dangerously drenched before an incoming storm, and left alone to find his own way back to her den, cold and tired.

Approaching him, River gently let her chin rest on the top of his head in hopes to bring him some ease. She couldn't leave him alone so soon, but she had no choice, she had to make sure the human was alright. When River was poisoned, she discovered it was a redheaded vampire who had done it. The same one who was hunting Bella. River had to be sure that creature wasn't lurking about Bella's home.

Pulling away, River blinked softly down at Kopa. "I will return soon," she said. "I must make sure everything is in order before I can rest."

Kopa seemed to be reluctant to leave her, but he nodded anyway. "Okay."

"And Kopa," River said before he could leave. "No hunting. I mean it. All the prey in the forest could be afflicted with the poison that brought me down. Be cautious."

The young werepuma only gave her a nod of affirmation before bounding away into the tree line of La Push beach, dashing back into the forest in the direction of the den site.

Once he was gone, River approached Bella's old truck that was still parked. The engine had been roared to life, however, and Bella was sitting inside in the passenger's seat with the heater on full blast. Beside her, Jacob was whispering to her about something, but stopped mid-sentence when he spotted River coming their way.

He tensed but gave her a nod of acknowledgement. "River."

"I'm coming with you," River said, meeting Bella's eyes that peered over Jacob's shoulder. "I have to make sure that vampire isn't skulking about your home."
