Let's start this off with a quick introduction. I am a father of one daughter, and I live in Russia. My parents moved to Russia from Germany, so, I was raised here. Even though I was raised in Russia, it's still pretty obvious that I am natively German: my name is Heinrich. Since I want to continue the tradition of German names, I named my daughter Gertrude. Gertrude is nine years old, and she is in second grade. She has very good grades at school. She had never gotten anything lower than a 4 (Russia's equivalent of a B), and brings home 5s (Russia's equivalent of an A, the highest mark possible in school) every day. She is a great daughter to have: loving, smart, and respectful. She doesn't have many friends, in fact, she has only two, but, she likes it that way, as she'd rather have a small amount of loyal and dear friends than have a large friend group that would leave her after a month of being friends. Both of her friends are just like her: smart and kind. They are both boys, one named Vanya (Ivan) and the other named Vlad (Vladimir). I am happy to know that my daughter has such great kids as friends, but, this is unsurprising, as she herself is just as good in all aspects as them. On another note, no, I never had to deal with Gertrude being called a Nazi by other kids or any of that shit. All of the other kids in her grade, as well as in her entire school, know that there are almost no Nazis left in Germany nowadays and that calling a German a Nazi just because they are German is the same as calling an Arab person a terrorist just because they are Arab, and that both are offensive prejudice that has to go. So, overall, everything's great in our lives. Gertrude's mother, Maria, lives in Moscow just like us, but, she lives far away. We aren't divorced, but, we do live separately. We sometimes visit her, or she visits us, and we are always happy to see her. Even though Gertrude has admitted that she loves me more than my wife, her mother, she does love both of us. Now, onto the actual story.
A few months ago, Gertrude's ninth birthday was coming up. I and Maria were thinking of a present. Maria thought that a good present would be a pet, as Gertrude is a responsible girl who likes almost all living things, both human and inhuman. I didn't want to buy a dog or cat, as Gertrude herself said that she doesn't like them that much, and I also didn't want to buy a fish, as there is no space in our apartment for an aquarium, even a small one. What pet could we choose for our lovely little girl? Suddenly, Maria got an idea. We should buy a pet butterfly! Gertrude loves butterflies, as she thinks that they are beautiful, and always wanted one of her own. But, I didn't know where we could buy a butterfly. So, I asked Maria about it. She said that there is a store called Fly-Fly where you can buy your own butterfly farm. The farm itself is a medium-sized, transparent cylindrical jar. There is a pack with butterfly chrysalises. They have to be hung inside of the box. After a while, the chrysalises would turn into butterflies, and you would need to take care of these butterflies. When I heard that, I got excited. Owning something like that sounded exciting! I asked Maria where the nearest Fly-Fly store was. She told me the address, and we drove there. It wasn't that far away from our apartment block, so, we got there pretty quickly, since there were no traffic jams. We went inside the store, and bought one of the farms. We wrapped it in some colorful wrapping paper. A few days later, it was Gertrude's birthday. She was overjoyed upon receiving the gift. Right after the birthday celebration, we set up the farm and placed it inside of her room. She was very happy and promised that she would take good care of her new pets. In the days after Gertrude's birthday, the chrysalises grew. However, something was off. They took way too long to grow. Weeks had passed, and these things still weren't hatching! We were afraid that we had somehow accidentally killed the butterflies, however, when we checked, we found out that they were, in fact, alive. We were happy that the butterflies were alive, but, we were certainly weirded out by their way-too-long hatching time. After a few weeks, something odd hatched out of the chrysalises. It looked like...lizards. Small lizards, small enough to fit into a child's palm, of assorted colors. Some were black, others red, purple, or navy blue. There were also some with mixed colors. When we first saw them, we thought that we might have bought a knockoff instead of the real butterfly farm, but, the package had the shiny seal that meant it was the real thing, so, what was going on? We were also a little bit scared. What if these lizards were poisonous? However, Gertrude seemed happy to have the lizards, and even called them baby dragons. There was one problem for all of us, though. What should we feed the little guys with? The instruction manual said that butterflies liked fresh fruits, but, these things were certainly not butterflies and never were, so, what do they eat? Gertrude proposed an idea: maybe, we could present them with different types of food and see what they eat? I agreed with her idea, and laid out a piece of raw meat, a slice of orange, some nuts, and a few dead flies, all on separate napkins. I then let the lizards out of their habitat. Each type of food appealed to each lizard, so, we decided to feed them with meat and fruits. Across the span of a few weeks, the lizards grew in size. I also saw that each one had two bulges on their heads and backs that slowly grew as time passed. The lizards slowly grew horns and wings. They also grew sharp little teeth. Ever since they grew these teeth, we always wore gloves while handling them. The increase in size also caused problems with the habitat. We had to make a DIY habitat for these creatures, as they were too large to fit in the compartment that was supposed to be used for containment of butterflies. Everything was fine after that, until two weeks ago. I woke up to see our apartment in ruins. The windows were shattered, and our pets were nowhere to be seen. I was first afraid that a robber had broken into our apartment and trashed it, but, no! That wasn't possible! We lived in a block of flats with tight security at the entrance! Plus, nothing was stolen, and it seemed like the mess was caused accidentally, and not by someone searching for valuables. I looked out the broken window, and saw some strange creatures flying in the red sky. We decided to go outside the block of flats to see what was going on more closely. What we saw was unbelievable! It was clear that dragons were flying around the sky, around the amount that we had purchased and raised. At that moment, I understood what had happened. Our pets had turned into their full forms and broken out of our tiny apartment to explore the big, wide world. It wasn't a robber. It wasn't even a human. It was something from beyond the mortal world. We all stared at this sight in disbelief. After looking at it, we decided to talk about it. Not about the dragons, but the destruction they had accidentally caused. We decided that we were going to stay at Maria's apartment while our windows were repaired. While we were at Maria's apartment, I decided to search up "fly fly dragon scandal". I found a few reports of people having the same thing that happened to us happen to them. It was explained by Fly-Fly themselves that this was caused by a factory employee purposefully replacing the butterfly chrysalises with whatever many people, including us, got. They also said that this would be resolved, and that they would certainly find whoever did this. I never found out the identity of the perpetrator, but, hopefully, nothing bad happened to me and my family. The repairs are said to be finished in a few weeks. We are happy that everything went well.
