Sunlight

I hear the front door of my house open, and I open my eyes.

I can hear two familiar footsteps making their way through the house after closing the front door.

I lay back down, stretching a little in my bed, looking around my room. Sunlight shining through parts of the curtain.

Simpler times make their way into my thoughts, before I knew the truth about myself. Vie still hasn't found me, if she's even looking.

I've been here five years.

It's so easy to lose track of time.

Through not exactly legal means, Mason helped me get all the things required to be a legal citizen. He's been very helpful to me, and he's currently my best friend.

I bought the motel from the previous owner using the money I carried with me, and I tore it down and built it into a decent hotel. That cleared me out at first, but it was worth the risk.

"Mae!!"

I hear a high-pitched voice calling me and a tiny body jumps onto my bed.

With a huff I move the blanket off of me and look at the little being who jumped on me.

"Now Kaylee, you know what I've said about jumping on me."

She looks up at me with her blue eyes, the same shade as her father's, and a small pout on her face.

"But it's so fun."

I mock gasp and hold my hand to my chest with an offended look on my face.

"Fun?! I'll show you fun!"

I grab the excited little girl into my arms and start tickling her viciously. She laughs and screams, trying to escape the hold I've got her in.

"Daddy! Help!"

Mason appears in the doorway with his arms crossed and a disapproving glare.

"What's going on in here?"

I look at his mischievous eyes and almost forgot what I had been about to say. I snap out of it and get back into character.

Holding a still struggling 3 year old in my arms, I put on my most convincing villain act.

"She thinks jumping on me is fun, now I'm gonna show her fun, mua haha." Okay maybe it's not convincing.

He plays along and gasps.

"No, not my sweet precious baby! Unhand her you fiend!"

I start tickling her again and she's a bundle of giggles.

"Daddy help me!" She says in between laughs.

He runs up to the bed and jumps on it, causing Kaylee and I to lift off of it slightly. When we land on the bouncing bed we're all in hysterics and it takes a few minutes for us to calm down.

When I'm fully calmed I lean back on the bed, propped up on my pillows.

"Now that play time's over, why are you two in my house?"

He leans on both elbows and looks at me.

"Because you love us?"

Kaylee mirrors her father and now they are both looking at me with puppy dog eyes.

I sigh and wonder why I ever gave him a key.

"What do you want?"

"Only for the most precious person in my life to spend the day with my bestest friend in the world."
