Tom is a parselmouth. Tom Riddle Sr. fell in love with Merope, courted her, and asked her to marry him. Merope was born a squib, so her father knew no wizard would ever marry her and allowed the marriage. The Gaunts didn't acknowledge her son Tom. Merope's father passed away leaving Merope half the money.
