Sitting side by side on the couch, he rested his hand on my belly. “How are you feeling?”, he asked.
“OK. Kind of tired. Oooh, I could really go for a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Please?” He got up and went to the kitchen.
“You know, our little peanut isn’t much bigger than a peanut," he replied matter of factly.
I smiled. “You have been reading again.”
“Of course I have," he chuckled, bringing me my sandwich.
He was over the moon excited when we found out that I was pregnant. He immediately went out and bought books and started waiting on me hand and foot. We had only told a few people, our parents and siblings.
Settling back in next to me, he picked his book back up. “The appointment is at 10 am tomorrow, right?”, he asked.
“Yep.” I answered with my mouth full. He beamed at me. It was our first ultrasound appointment and we would get to hear the heartbeat for the first time.
The next day we were at the doctor’s office. I was laying on the table with the cold gel on my tummy. He was standing there holding my hand. They had given him a chair, but he was too excited to sit. The technician was moving the wand and pointing to things on the screen. They all just looked like blobs to me, but Avi was enthralled. She flipped a switch and soon the room was filled with a woom-woom sound. Avi’s eyes lit up and he had a look of pure joy on his face as the technician advised that this was the baby’s heartbeat.
“This is so cool, but is there always an echo?”, he asked. The tech got a perplexed look, flipped off the switch, and excused herself.
Avi squeezed my hand and tried to assure me that everything was fine. A minute later, the tech came back with the doctor. She introduced herself to Avi and replaced the tech at the wand. She moved it around and turned the sound back on. She looked at us and advised that the echo that Avi heard wasn't an echo, it was a second heartbeat. She then pointed to the screen and pointed out Baby A and Baby B. Avi’s knees gave out and he fell into the chair behind him.
“Twi-twins?”, he stammered, eyes wide.
The doctor nodded and said congratulations. We looked at each other in disbelief. He then broke out in the cheesiest grin, “I can’t wait for this adventure!”
