We had been house sitting for a week for a friend just outside of Nashvillle. He was calmer and more at peace than I had ever seen him. We were laying in bed one morning as the sun was coming up. I woke up to find him watching me. “Good morning, beautiful. How did you sleep?”
I smiled at him as I stretched. “I slept great. It’s perfect here.”
He pulled me into his arms and kissed me softly. ”I’m glad to hear you say that. How would you feel about living here permanently?”
“Hmmm?” I pulled back to see his face. He was serious.
“I bought a piece of property in this area shortly before we met. I think I am ready to build on it. We can go see it today, if you would like.” He smiled and kissed me again.
I got very excited. “I would love to.” I always thought Nashville would be the perfect place for him. Music studios not far, lots of places to perform, and he can live in nature. I started climbing out of bed to get in the shower. I couldn’t wait to see where our future home would be. The questions came out of me rapid fire. “How long will it take to draw up the plans? How long will it take to build? Oh my god, is this really happening?”
He chuckled, following me into the bathroom. Grabbing me around the waist he pulled me to him. “Shhh little bird. The plans have already been started, they just need to be finalized. As far as building goes, I think a month or two. As long as you are okay with it, yes this is really happening.” He kissed me softly and pushed me towards the shower. “Let's head into town and get breakfast and then I will show you our new home.”
We showered quickly and got ready to go. I was practically bouncing. He kept shushing me so he could make a couple of phone calls. I couldn’t stop giggling.
“C’mon silly girl. Let’s go. I can’t wait to show you this. The contractor will meet us at the land in a couple of hours. I’m starving.” He ushered us out the door and to the car. We made it to breakfast and I actually managed to savor it as opposed to inhaling it. He took care of it and got us on the road to our next destination. “Just so you know, it is a bit of a drive.”
He wasn’t kidding. He continued driving us further and further out of the city and into the middle of nowhere. He was smiling and whistling and holding my hand. At some point we turned off the paved road and onto a dirt lane. The tree cover was heavy and beautiful. I was in awe. After a few minutes the trees gave way to a sunlit clearing. There was already a pick up truck parked off to the side. I could hardly breathe, it was perfect and I could picture waking up to this view every day of my life.
He parked and came around and opened my door. “Oh sweetie, this is beautiful. How did you find this?”
He took my hand and kissed the back of my knuckles. “Esther found out about it and showed it to me. I had to have it.” He pulled me over to the kind looking man standing next to the pick up truck. “Jim, this is my girlfriend Rae. Rae, this is my contractor Jim Brown.” I shook his hand and smiled.
His grip was strong. “Nice to meet the person he has been gushing about. Avi, I have the plans we talked about, want to see them?” He nodded fervently and Jim led us around to the back of the pick up truck. He rolled out the plans on the folded down tailgate. He started on the first page which was the first floor. He and Avi pointed out a lot of features, but I was having a hard time picturing it. Jim pulled out his laptop and pulled up some pictures with real examples of what the house would have. I could really picture it then.
It was a very open floor plan with high ceilings and exposed beams. It was designed to look like a cabin with lots of raw wood. The windows were large and seemed like they would let in a lot of natural light. There was an entire room upstairs that looked like a treehouse. The kitchen was spacious with a lot of counter space. There was a beautiful stone fireplace set up in the family room. There were large porches on both the front and the back of the house. All in all it looked like the perfect space for us. I was daydreaming and staring at the space where the house would sit while Avi and Jim went over the plans and made notes and minor changes.
“Earth to Rae. Where did you go?”
“Hmm?” I barely heard my name as Avi tried to get my attention.
“C’mere.” He pulled me to his side. “Are there any changes you want to make before we finalize this?”
I was shocked at the question. I looked at the plans. It all seemed pretty perfect to me. “Can there be a window above the kitchen sink?
“Oh yes please. How did I miss that”, Avi chimed in. Jim smiled and made the change.
“Avi, if everything looks good, we can break ground next week. As long as the weather cooperates we could be finished in five to six weeks. You could be moved in by the end of the summer.”
I could see the tears forming in his eyes and I couldn’t stop the ones that slipped down my cheeks. He picked me up and spun me around. I can’t wait to move into our house with you. He kissed me softly. We were literally building a future together.
