Allison and I took an uber to the venue. I ran through the conversation a thousand times in my head on the way. I had no idea how he would react. I could only hope we were on the same page.
The boys were getting everything set up on stage when we arrived. Kaleb came over and hugged Allison. Noah was setting up the drum kit and Avi was straightening cables. Allison whispered something to Kaleb and he suggested that it was time to break for lunch. I made my way to Avi.
"How about you and I hang back by ourselves? Please?" He wra[[ed his arms around me and held me tight.
"Sure. Everything okay?" He looked a little concerned.
I nodded. "Everything is fine. I just want a little alone time. Just the two of us." I smiled my best smile.
"Anything for you my love." He kissed my forehead and led me towards the dressing room. Allison and the boys grabbed the rest of the staff and headed off to lunch, saying their goodbyes as they went.
Avi called in an order to a local bbq place and we settled in on the couch. He pointed to the little gift bag in my hand. "For me?"
I giggled. "Sorta. For us. I think I know why I have been so sick."
He raised his eyebrows and took the bag from me. "Oh really? Do I get to open this?"
I nodded, trying not to shake. I was so nervous. "Please do." I bit my lip and watched him with wide eyes.
He took his sweet time getting into the bag. He pulled out the ziplock baggie and it took him a few moments to realize what he was looking at. "Is this? You are? Are we? How?" His eyes were wide and he wasn't really breathing.
"I am. Well we are really. It's why I have been so sick. Apparently in some people this thing can start to lose its effectiveness after a year or so." I was waiting to find out his reaction beyond the shock. He got quiet and just studied the tests. I couldn't handle the silence anymore. "So. How do you feel?"
He looked up at me and smiled with tears in his eyes. "This is amazing!" He pulled me into his arms and hugged me tight and kissed me wildly. "I'm gonna be a dad." He pulled back and put his hand on my belly. "The thought never even crossed my mind."
"Mine either. Michelle suggested taking a test." I kissed him softly and wiped the tears off of his cheeks. "I'm glad this is good news. I was scared."
He put his hands over the top of mine and held them between us. "This is the best news. We have worked our lives around everything else, why not this? So, what do we do now?"
"Well I called my doctor and she advised me to go and get this implant removed as soon as possible. She also advised that we get a blood test to confirm and an ultrasound. She suggested going to an ER or urgent care and explain the situation."
"Good thing we have tomorrow off. We can go tonight on our way to Colorado." He just smiled and touched my belly again. "A baby. We are going to have a baby."
I couldn't stop the happy tears that slipped down my face. "I love you and I cannot wait to go on this adventure with you."
We were interrupted by a knock at the door letting us know that our food arrived. We laughed and wiped our eyes and settled in to eat our lunch. We were all smiles by the time the rest of the group returned from their lunch. My usually tight lipped fiance was practically bursting at the seams and spilled the good news. We were enveloped into hugs and congratulations quickly so the boys could start their sound check.
Allison and I were left to our own devices for a while. She smiled and hugged me. "In the words of a wise man, it turns out fine."
