It was his first live solo show in over a year. He looked so at home up on that stage. The venue was small and intimate. The crowd was mellow. The air was magical. I was in awe as I watched him through my camera lens as I attempted to blend into the crowd. I laughed at myself as I remembered that this was my job now and I couldn't just let myself get lost in the music. He was so confident and sure of himself as he stepped up to the mic and slipped his guitar onto his body. He greeted the audience and they went nuts. He caught me staring at him and gave me a private little smile and a wink. I blushed and continued to make my way through the crowd to get various shots of him from different angles.
It was March and we were in Europe. I was looking forward to seeing some of the sights as I had never been out of the country. I knew he had a lot of fans all over the world, but I couldn’t believe how absolutely devoted to him they were. The venue was sold out and it was standing room only. I had made my way to the very back of the room and I was just absorbing the atmosphere. I could distinctly hear fans singing along with him and not missing a word. I took a few pictures from this vantage point and tried not to cry. He was where he belonged and it had never been more obvious to me. I lost my place on the setlist as I got lost in my thoughts. I needed to be backstage soon. I continued moving through the crowd taking pictures here and there until I got backstage. I hid myself on the side of the stage so that I could get some close up shots of him and his band. He was on the road with two very talented men so that he had some other instruments at his disposal and he didn’t have to give up the beautiful harmonies that his songs are known for. Kaleb smiled at me and Noah followed suit.
I got a few more shots of all three together as they got ready to perform their last song before the encore. I slipped off stage and waited in the hallway for him to come join me. It wasn’t long before he was wrapping himself around me. He was so happy and his heart was racing. He’d never tell anyone, but he still gets nervous before every performance. I hugged him back and kissed him softly. “Have I told you today how amazing you are?”
He laughed and kissed the top of my head. “No and I never get tired of hearing it either.”
The audience was chanting his name and calling for the encore. He held me a little tighter and made them wait a few more minutes. Noah and Kaleb retook the stage and the crowd went crazy. Avi slowly counted to ten and followed them. The crowd got louder. I was so unbelievably proud of him. I went back out into the crowd and got some more pictures. I wanted to make sure that I got their bow. I made my way back to the dressing room and collapsed onto the couch next to Avi. His eyes were closed, but he pulled me into his side and held me tight. “Did you enjoy your first show working for me?” There was laughter in his voice.
I blushed and smiled. “I had to keep reminding myself that I had a job to do and that I wasn't just a spectator.” I looked down at the camera and chuckled. “It looks like I took over 100 pictures though.”
He took the camera from me and casually flipped through the pictures. “You really have some beautiful shots here.” He flipped some more. “Some really beautiful shots. I love seeing this from your perspective. I definitely think we found a perfect place for you in all of this.”
