The jeep bounces around as I grip Harry's arm to keep from bouncing out of the open jeep.
We had just arrived in Last night and this morning at 10 we got up and headed out to breakfast and after that we started on our journey to the Red Cross camp.
The jeep bounces again and I grip onto The roof handle.
"Shit." I mutter.
"Language." Harry kisses my nose.
"Sorry it's just hot, and bumpy and ugh." I mutter.
"It's Africa what do you expect?" Laura laughs from behind me.
I'm sitting in between my mother who's driving and Harry. Laura and Zak sit in the back seat.
"I don't know. Ice, water, penguins, polar bears." I joke.
"That's pretty much the opposite of this place." Zak laughs.
"That's the point." Laura says and he smacks her upside the head and they laugh.
I shake my head and look at Harry but something catches my eye to the side.
"Stop the car!" I yell.
My mom slams on her breaks and I climb over Harry before jumping out of the jeep and sprinting away. I get to the little body that lays on the ground. I drop to my knees next to the frail body. I check for a pulse to find their is one. I roll the body over to see its a little girl.
"Help! Someone help me!" I yell as I pick her up.
I stand up and stumble abit as I reajust her.
Harry runs over with my mom beside him.
"She's dehydrated. she needs water." mom tells me.
A little hand touches my face and I look down to find the girls eyes are open. She looks up at me, her brown eyes dull and dying.
"Your going to be okay." I say and her hand drops slowly.
I climb back into the jeep and set her in my lap. Harry and my mom climb back in the jeep and my mom puts the car in drive.
"Go faster!" I shout.
"I'm going as fast as I can! There's a speed limit you know!" My mother shouts at me.
"Who cares about the dog damn speed limit! She's dying and your worried about the speed limit?!" I look at Harry and I pass the girl to him. "Hold her."
"What are you doing?" My mom asks me as I push her back.
"Move." I instruct.
"What?" She asks and as she slows down the jeep.
I push her out of the way and I sit down in the drivers seat.
"Hold on to your weave." I say and I stomp on the gas, jolting us forward.
"Shit! Do you want a ticket?" Laura yells at me.
"Whatever it takes to get this girl to the hospital." I say and I pick up speed making the bumps even more horrible.
We pull up to the Red Cross camp and people walk out to us. I turn off the jeep and jump out before running to Harrys side. I grab the little girl and run toward the white tent.
"I need a doctor! Is anyone a nurse or something?" I ask and a woman takes her out of my arms.
The little girl reaches out to me as the woman turns away and rushes away.
I stop and look around. Kids. Kids In Every single bed. Kids crying, kids sleeping, kids sick, kids dying, kids starving. A sob escapes my throat as I the world beats down on me. This is real. Children are suffering.
I cover my mouth and Harry walks to my side.
"These poor babies." I whisper and he pulls me into his arms.
I sob into his shirt and he rubs my back as he sniffles.
"I know. I know." he soothes me.
"Their just babies. They shouldn't be going through this." I say and he squeezes me.
"I know Love. Lets do what we can to help them though. Okay?" He says as he pulls away. He runs his thumb over my cheek to wipe away a tear and I nod.
He takes my hand and walk walk out of the medical tent. The atmosphere out here is a lot better. Kids run around kicking soccer balls, throwing frisbees, jumping rope, ect.
"See not all of them are suffering." Harry says and I wipe my nose.
A soccer ball lands at my feet and I look up to see five or six kids watching us. I pick up the ball and give them a friendly smile.
"Can I play?" I ask and they smile before nodding.
I kick the ball and the kids run after it.
"Come on!" I call to Harry and he follows me.
We kick the ball back and forth with the kids and soon almost every healthy kid is playing one big soccer game with us. People take pictures of us as we play and as the kids use us as jungle gyms.
"I like your shirt." a girl tells me.
I look down at my white tank top that says 'moon child' and has the different moon phases. Im wearing a pair of Jean shorts and a pair of converse with my hair up in a bun too.
"Thank you." I smile.
These kids are so sweet. They don't deserve to be living in these conditions. The ball hits my arm and I grab it before running. The next thing I know is I'm being chased by over fifty kids.
Strong arms catch me and pull me back against his chest as I struggle.
"You won't take me alive!" I shout and The kids laugh as they try to take the ball from me.
"Take it and run from her!" Laura shouts from the group of people taking pictures.
A boy snatches it from me and runs as The arms lift me off the ground and whirl me around.
"How are you so light?" Harry asks.
"I don't eat much." I laugh.
"Well you'd should." he tells me as he sets me down.
"Catch me if you can!" The boy shouts and I look at Harry.
"Ready to chase a bunch of little kids?" I ask.
"I guess." he winks and we break into a run making the kids split up while screaming and laughing.
