"Patton, could you help me with these boxes?"
"Sure, just tryin' to... hey, come back here!"
Logan peered around the large box in his hands just in time to see their 6-year old daughter Liberty run out the door behind him and into their front yard.
"We did it Nugget! Freedom is ours!" She squealed with delight, twirling around and holding a fluffy brown... something in her hands.
"Sorry Lo, I'll be with you in a minute," Patton said apologetically, squeezing by Logan and running out to the yard. "Liberty, I've told you a million times, Nugget is not an outside animal!"
"Uh oh," Liberty mumbled as she made a dash for the safety of the house. She narrowly avoided Patton, but forgot entirely about Logan (who was still waiting in the hallway with the box).
"Going somewhere?" Logan asked mildly, stepping to the side to prevent an easy escape.
"Oh, uh... hi dad," she said guiltily. In her arms was a rather disheveled-looking guinea pig. It's fur was light brown with golden patches. It chirped nervously as Liberty hugged it tighter.
"Thanks Lo. I've been chasing her around all day," Patton commented, appearing in the doorway. Liberty looked up in surprise as Patton lifted the frightened cavy out of her arms.
"Aw maaan."
"You know neither Nugget or Puffers is allowed outside the house," Logan reminded her. "They aren't dogs, they are prey animals."
"Fine," she mumbled, tapping her boots against the floor.
"Well, if you put Nugget back in his cage, I'll let you play with him and Puffers after school tomorrow," Patton offered. "You have to stay inside though."
"Really?"
"You betcha kiddo!" Patton handed her the guinea pig.
"Let's go Nugget! I'm gonna get to play with you tomorrow!" Liberty giggled, skipping away with him. He squeaked loudly in protest, obviously not enjoying being treated like a stuffed animal.
"I'm starting to think that those guinea pigs aren't going to last very long."
"Don't let her hear that. She's having fun!"
"Well, Nugget certainly wasn't."
Patton shook his head and smiled.
"I'll go make sure he gets back into his cage," he said, following the sound of a rather displeased Nugget into the kitchen.
...
"Er... Patton, I still need help with this box."
