"Y/n! Y/n!" I hear muffled screams from the other side of the door as I scramble my way downstairs. It was late at night and I felt groggy and was half asleep.
"Coming!" My croaky voice yelled. I opened the door to see my friend, Billy, standing there. He looked a mess with his undone hair and cheeks running down his red face.
"Billy?" I asked, then was immediately greeted with a hug. "What's going on? What's wrong?" He didn't answer and continued to hug me tight. "Would you like to come in?"
"I better not, I have to hurry," he let me go. "I have something I really need to tell you."
"Well what is it?" I looked at him with concern. I had never seen him this way even when days weren't the best. He looked different in a way that I couldn't really put my finger on.
"I have to go away for a while," he said. I let in a short gasp of air.
"Go away? Where? When?"
"Soon, and I can't tell you. I just have to go."
"Why?" He looked down at the ground and sighed.
"I'm sorry but I can't tell you. It's my own business-"
"But we're best friends! I wanna come see you!"
"There's not much time anyway. I'm gonna go far, I don't know when I'll be back."
"Why can't you tell me, I'll help you. I'll understand!"
"No you won't!" He cried.
"Then I'll try! Please tell me!" I slammed the side of the door with my hand in frustration. It was three in the morning and I was hit with the news I've always dreaded. Billy was my best friend and I didn't want him to go, we've never kept secrets but it seems he's not letting this one go.
"There's something else I have to tell you," Billy said suddenly.
"What is it?" There was a small pause. He slowly grabbed my hand and kissed me on the cheek, but also very near my lips. "I love you." This time I let in a real gasp, my heart jumped and I looked at him with surprise.
"Billy I- since when?" I asked.
"Since always."
"Why didn't you ever tell me? And what about Phyllis?"
"I've broken up with her. It's always been you, though. I have to admit that you're the hardest I have to let go of, I almost didn't come thinking it'd be easier on me. But I couldn't let you go thinking that I was hurt and I needed this off my chest." Hot tears filled my eyes and spilled onto my face. I embraced him in another hug and once we let go I kissed him back.
"I'm gonna miss you so much Bill," I cried. "Please, please call me. Please come back!"
"I'll try. I have to go now," he gave me one last, solemn look then turned to retrieve a duffel bag he had left at my mail box. I watched him leave until he disappeared into the shadowy night.
