Hands up, you're surrounded
Let me go-
So you thought you could tie me down
Bribe me into staying afloat
But the life raft you tossed
It popped
Or was it always made of stone?
Either way it's pulled me in
To the depths I've always dreaded-

You promised compensation
For my toil and my time
You promised to pay me for
My blood, sweat and tears
But you never did
No
You never did.

Inadequacy was your signature style
That's all you provided, the bare minimum
I'm lucky to be frugal
You ground my bones and tore my muscle
I'm not even close to elderly
But my body feels like it already.

So you thought you could make me stay
But two years have passed already
And I'm sick of this place,
Tired of running on a treadmill
That someone keeps speeding up
Running to keep up, for if I stop
I'll fall off.

So you thought I wouldn't escape,
A bird in a cage with overgrown wings
Ready to fly, feathers spread
To their potential.

Just watch this Phoenix rise,
Shaking off the dust of your oppression, monotony and repetition
Watch these fragmented bones fuse, filling with rich marrow
Strong enough to stand alone
Watch this shattered heart beat, shoving luscious blood through thriving veins
And watch this life bloom before you
Watch it flourish alone, free to roam
Because I have outgrown you,
You are nothing but a stepping stone
And I no longer need you

Power is mine now,
Free to do as I please
Make a name for myself
And finally reach for my dreams.
