"Well, Evan doesn't like Xavier and so doesn't Luca. So we just looked at you here and there to keep an eye out you know?" Kai said as he sat next to me and looked everywhere but me. Everything I knew about them seemed like a lie now.
"Thank you but I don't need it, it's okay," I said before grabbing my bag from where Kai placed it.
"It's okay, my ass. You're lucky to have us, Floare. How are you today?" Luca came behind me and dropped his bag next to where he sat down which is right beside me. He eyed the twins to see a sign of dissatisfaction or a message but Caleb shook his head. They were looking out for me.
I noticed that I've been too quiet and Luca has been watching my side. I don't even know if he was aware that he's openly staring at me but it made me bounce my leg under the desk from nervousness. I sighed when I realized that my neck was turning red. I bit the inside of my cheek and turned to look at him when he didn't stop staring at me.
He smiled and gave me a wink before biting into his food. I took a deep breath and turned away from him. Now every time I see him with glasses, I imagine his messy hair and the leather jacket he always seems to keep in his car.
"So, Cassia. What do you think about Luca's looks around the school? I don't understand how girls swoon for his ugly ass." Evan blurted out and I was glad that he finally broke the ice with me. He was the most talkative in the group besides Caleb. But Caleb wasn't good at making friends from anxiety.
"They act like they like Luca to get to sit at your table and meet you guys. Nobody likes his looks." I said the last sentence in a sigh. Evan laughed and I could see Caleb snicker. Kai was uninterested and looking at his food.
"I like her," Evan said and I had to look down and bite my lip to hide my smile.
They like me!
Why?
"Yeah, I do too. I might pull some moves unless Luca does honestly. Has anyone else noticed the matching names too? Caleb and Cassia?" Caleb spoke up excitedly as his eyes lit up while speaking. I smiled embarrassedly and was about to thank him.
"Your names don't match at all, asshole. Get your head out of your ass." Evan grumbled and Kai smiled at his brother's attempt at flirting.
"Not like any of you have a fucking chance," Luca said before throwing his phone down after texting someone. He looked annoyed by his friends and they all noticed Luca's mood change which made them shut up about me.
"Nobody likes my looks, Floare? Is that so?" Luca leaned onto my ear as everyone else was speaking to each other. Luca and I were completely forgotten in the chattering. "We'll see about that." He said and I felt his breath on my jaw.
"I'm going out tonight. Without the boys." He said before leaning back on his seat and I tried to get ahold of my breathing. I couldn't process the words I wanted to say next to him.
"Okay?" I said and crossed my arms. I also leaned back on my seat and he gave me a sideways glance as his lips curved up in a smirk. "Up for another escape?" I pursed my lips as I exhaled heavily.
I didn't want to, I didn't but I shook my head as a no.
I watched as his eyebrows creased and he narrowed his eyes. "My parents... I'm already on thin ice around them from the last one. I don't think they'll let me go on this one without permanently damaging me." I said as I took a deep breath and he raised one of his eyebrows.
"Who the fuck cares what they say? Aren't you eighteen?" I nodded and rolled my eyes at him which he didn't seem to like but let it go anyway. "Okay, then I don't see a problem with 'going out with a friend' or 'studying till late at the library for a group project'." He said and I bit my lip which he extra carefully watched.
"Well, they would say no anyway. You don't know how my parents are, how strict everything is. I'm not living my life, Luca. I'm a robot, programmed to do whatever they want me to do. They choose what I do and don't." He stared at me thinking deeply and dragged his tongue on his bottom lip.
I was dazed by it for a while then shook my head gently. "How would your parents react if you just straight up did something they specifically forbid you to do?" I asked him. He didn't give me the reaction I expected with that one.
He let out a laugh and held his stomach. "My parents and yours are not the same, Floare. Don't even compare them." He said amusedly and kept the mocking smile on his lips.
I mean, he did hurt people for a living so it wouldn't be surprising to find out that he went through a lot and that's what his parents did to him growing up. "I'm sorry." I let out a heavy breath as he watched my expression fall into a pout. "Did they hurt you?" I asked hesitantly and he reacted way more openly than a normal abused kid would.
"My parents thought me how to fight." He said unbothered like he was happy with the way he grew up. He even learned from them? That's just sad.
"I'm sorry," I repeated quietly and he smiled again which surprised me.
"My mother taught me how to fight dirty and my father taught me how to always win and always survive just like how they taught my brothers. I'll always owe them for that, what makes you apologize?" He said openly and I narrowed my eyes as I listened to him. I was scared to ask what they did for a living.
Also, it's crazy to think Luca has 'brothers'. Plural.
I wonder what their family pictures look like...
"Are they like cops or work for the government?" I asked hesitantly and this time he let out a full-blown laugh. He did say they knew how to fight.
I must be too off. But that just makes me concerned even more about my safety around him.
"Well, no. Not at all. But don't worry about it. I don't have anything to worry about with them unless I specifically do something they told me not to. Then I'd be absolutely fucked." He said his voice still shaky with the small laughter continuing.
"I'm so confused," I said and he shook his head as his smile disappeared.
"Look, Floare. You get into my car after school and have a fucking amazing time with me. Let me remind you, not many people get to spend time with me and enjoy it so you're lucky." He pointed his finger at my chest and I looked away as I shook my head.
"I'm so fluttered," I said and he raised his eyebrows slightly. "What happens if they never let me out of the house ever again and I get homeschooled which is not being sarcastic. It will most likely happen when they realize that I'm not studying after school at the library." He rolled his eyes this time and wrapped his arm around my chair. He leaned closer to my face and I backed up from him which made a smirk tug on his lips.
"Tell them to fucking try me, Floare." But I just met him the other week?! Why does he care that I'm a prisoner in my own family?
I finally get a chance to live.
A chance to live my life the way I want to. I can do something else besides studying at night, I can have all the fun in the world because it's Luca who's with me.
I've watched him fight and he made himself clear about having no intentions to hurt me unless I snitched. What makes me think I'm going to back off from this?
Nothing.
