"SEOOKJIIIINNNNNN GET UP!!!!!"
I heard my mother screaming from downstairs. I was still in bed. I just didn't want to wake up. I mean why should I? I have graduated High School, now I can do whatever I feel like. I will go to college next month. I get up from my bed unwillingly and went to the bathroom to freshen up. Then I went downstairs to have my breakfast.
"Look at his boy. How much more do you want to sleep?" My mother scolded me.
I did not answer her. It was early in the morning and I just woke up, I didn't want to argue with her, so I kept my mouth shut. "Have you packed your things?" She asked again.
"Ah Yes! I did everything is packed and ready to move." This was the conversation I needed! I and my family are moving to Seoul City in 3 days. I'm super excited. New city, new people, new friends, new life. I can't wait to go to the city and fall in love. I mean it's just a phrase. But who knows? Maybe I'll find someone I love.
"Hyung are you still going to your farewell party?" Jimin asked looking up from his console.
"I don't know. I haven't thought yet"
"It's in 2 hours Hyung. And you still haven't thought? How ignorant can you be?" Taehyung complained.
"Aish look at these boys! Scolding their Hyung?! Did you forget I'm older than you? How dare you ask me such questions!"
"Okay okay sorry," Jimin said laughing.
I had my breakfast imagining my life in a new city. After I completed eating I got up from the table and went to my room. I had a farewell party that my friends were throwing. I didn't want to go. My friends are kind of annoying, I don't like them much, I don't even feel like calling them, friends. Moreover, it doesn't matter, I'll be leaving in 3days never to return. While I was still debating whether to go or not my phone rang. It was Han. I picked up the call reluctantly.
"Hi"
"Hey, dude. Aren't you coming? We are all waiting for you here"
"Ah! I don't..."
"Just shut the fuck up and get your ass here" he cut me off by shouting through the phone. "All the girls are here come fast!" And with that, he hung the phone. Girls... Huh! I don't like girls. It's a little secret between me and my brothers. I'm gay. My mother knows but we don't talk about it directly. I haven't told my friends. Because they don't approve of it.There was a boy in class 10, once they found out he was gay, they started bullying him. That guy committed suicide later. That's why I wanna leave Ulsan and go to Seoul. Where I won't get judged by whom I like and can finally have a free life.
I get up to get dressed. I wear black jeans a loose striped blue shirt and a black bomber jacket with red high tops. I know red high tops don't really go with my outfit, but I love them and wear them almost everywhere. Now they are quite worn out though.
The party music could be heard from afar, they were being extra noisy. As soon as I enter the house a strong smell of alcohol hit my nostrils. It's not that I don't drink, but these guys overdo everything. I spot my friends sitting on a couch with some girls at the corner. I felt an immediate urge to turn around and leave but Han saw me and waved at me. I had no option but to join them. I walked over to the couch and sat at the end. "What took you so long handsome man?"
"Packing and all. You know I'm leaving Ulsan soon so I'm busy lately"
"That's so sad" Soojin whined with puppy eyes. She's annoying as fuck. She's so clingy with me. I mean I'm one of the most handsome guys in my high school and there are a lot of girls who crush on me, but Soojin is so annoying. She can't keep her hands to herself and tries to interfere with my personal life. I ignored her and looked in another direction.
"Soju?" Han offered me some. "Yes please"
The volume suddenly increased and now my head was throbbing. I wanted to go home, or rather run home.
"Hey, you know Yoda?" Somebody in the group said all of a sudden. I wasn't really into their conversation so I just focused on my soju.
"Yeah what?"
"Oohhh I heard he's gay!" I almost dropped my bottle. "Wh- what? Who?" I asked. "Yoda. Don't you remember him? That athlete" "Ah yes" I nodded. And then it started. "What a shame. Such a handsome guy and he's gay." "Ewww how can he even be" "That's why I always felt creepy around him" "What the fuck we boys aren't safe now!" I couldn't take it anymore. All this nonsense.
"Yeah, you! You are all homophobic people! What do you think you're cool? All this makes you cool? All you do is sit, drink and say shit about people. Don't you have better work than this? How can you judge someone by whom they like? A person may like whoever he wants. You people have no right to say those mean things. You know what? You are a shame to this society. You are trash and you ALL STINK!" I shouted the last few words turned around and left the place.
"Hey, Jin wait! Jin wait! Seokjin! KIM SEOKJIN!" I could hear Han shouting my name to stop me. But I didn't turn around and went straight home.*Time skip* The day when they leave for Seoul.
Everything was packed and we were ready to leave. I was standing outside the house waiting for my parents to come out. Both of my brothers had gone to say goodbye to their friends. I didn't. Nobody wanted to talk to me after my little drama at the party. Han tried calling every day but I didn't pick it up. I didn't want to talk to anyone. I just wanted to leave this place as soon as possible.
"Hey, buddy!" I turned around at the familiar voice. "Seems like you are leaving already," Han said coming closer. Why was he up so early? Just to meet me? Aish that can't happen.
"Yeah... What are you doing here?"
"What do you think I'm doing here? I have come to bid goodbye to you!" Honestly, I was a little surprised. I have known Han since childhood. He and I were good friends and he might be the only person I call a friend in this whole town. But I don't like the other people he hung around with so that's why we didn't talk much.
"But it's too early"
"Can't I do this much for my childhood friend? And I know you won't ever come back once you leave. So it was worth waking up this early given that I'm seeing you for the last time." He looked... Sad? Is he looking sad?
"Ah... Yes maybe..."
We stood there in silence. We didn't know what to speak. Finally, I broke the silence.
"You know I didn't expect you to come after what happened that day. I thought you wouldn't want to talk to me. Han you know you are the only person I can call my friend in this whole town. I know we have drifted apart but, I would like to continue our friendship"
He was taken aback. He was surprised but smiled at me. "I know bro. It's sad to see you go. And you thought I wouldn't talk to you? So why would I call you?"
"Yeah. That's true" We again fell silent. After 2 minutes my parents came out. Han greeted them. He helped us load our luggage in the van.
"So you're finally leaving"
"Yeah. Finally"
"Where are your brothers?"
"We will pick them up on the way"
"Cool," Again silence. Maybe that's how it is when you fall apart with your best friend. Things become awkward and filled with silence.
"Good luck. And may you find your dream man." Wait, what? Did he say, man? Does he know? I gave him a look as if he's a ghost standing there.
"Don't look at me like that dude. I knew it. I mean I suspected as you never told me anything. But the way you behaved at the party, convinced me."
"So you don't have any problem? Why didn't you tell anyone or make fun of me?"
"Why would I? Love is the only thing that matters. You may love anyone."
I suddenly hugged him tight. He was surprised but hugged me back.
"I'm so sorry Han. I misunderstood you. Please forgive me."
"Ah, no worries. Just don't forget me, keep in touch. And tell me when you find your man."
"I will."
My dad honked, signalling it was time we left. "Bye buddy" "Bye Han"
I climbed into the van at the back. Han was standing there all the time, waving at me. As his figure grew smaller and smaller there was something in me that became sadder. Maybe it was my guilt for judging Han and pushing him away. There was so much on my mind, I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
