He never meant to go this far.

He never planned on getting so attached.

He had a job to do, and every intent to complete it. He wasn't here to mess around, he wasn't here to make friends. He was here as a double agent, a spy of all things. He wasn't here to fall in love.

Well, that backfired.

Here he was, lying next to the scarred man he was supposed to stab in the back soon. His eyes traced the staples attaching skin grafts to pale flesh. He reached a hand out, cupping the sleeping face of the man who always managed to make his heart race. He brushed his thumb against his cheek, tracing the thin line between living and dead skin.

He brushed over one of the staples and Dabi's face contorted, his nose scrunching up slightly. Hawks froze, a mixed feeling of fear that he woke up his volatile lover and amusement at how cute he was in the mornings.

He blinked, and by the time he opened his eyes, cerulean ones stared back at him. He still had yet to retract his hand.

"The hell are you doing?" Dabi's gruff morning voice sent a shiver down the reckless blond's spine. Finally, he removed his hand, reaching to grab a fistful of the front of the white shirt loosely covering the taller's chest. He buried his face into it, taking in the familiar stench of smoke.

"What, I can't show my boyfriend a little love?" He chuckled.

"No, you can't. 'Cause we're not boyfriends."

Hawks froze, eyes shooting open. He shot up, his fist still gripping the thin white fabric.

"What?"

The air was tense. Dabi sighed.

"I don't know why I gotta spell it out for you, Birdie. You're a hero, I'm a villain, you really thought we could work?" Dabi pulled Hawks's hand away and turned to sink into the bed they were sharing, pulling the sheets back over his shoulders and shutting his eyes again as he nuzzled his face into the pillow.

"I'm with you guys though, remember?" His heart rate picked up as he tried to protect his status. If Dabi was skeptical of him, it could ruin the whole mission, not that he was very fond of the idea of carrying through with it anymore.

Dabi took a deep breath and sighed. He opened his eyes again and rolled onto his back, glaring up at the ceiling. "I know you're not who you say. You're the number two hero," he spat, "I find it hard to believe you'd so willingly join the people who try to kill your people, who terrorized the class of your little pupil. You may be stupid, but you're not that stupid."

Hawks coughed at the reference to Tokoyami, he didn't realize they knew about him. Was his mission putting others in danger?

"Dabi I-"

"Dont." Dabi scowled, turning his back toward the other man in his bed. He scoffed at the red feathers coating the room, his face softening. He didn't want to wake up in a world where these feathers weren't coating his bedroom floor. "Listen, Hawks-"

"Keigo"

"...Keigo... I'm not good at talking things through. I'll admit I'm not good at this whole romance thing, or communicating especially. I'm screwed up in the head, you don't wanna be with someone like me." Hawks's eyebrows creased in concern. He wasn't normally so open, must be hungover or something. "This isn't some Shakespearean love story where the young couple from opposing worlds get together regardless. I would... I would love to love you. I would love to conquer this antihesis and hold you in my arms forever, even if your annoying-as-all-hell feathers get in the way so much. But you know how Romeo and Juliet ended."
