"We're pretty sure Dereks still alive. But he killed one of ours. So that means either one of two things can happen. Either he joins our pack... or Kahli goes after him. And we kill him. That's the way it works."

Scott and I walked into the busy hospital and scanned through the injured patients to try and spot Ms. McCall. I noticed people being wheeled in on gurneys and some people were sitting in the waiting room, holding a pack of ice on their head.

"What happened here?" I asked, the strong smell of fresh blood laced in my nose.

I looked at Scott, who shrugged. I saw a smile form on his lips as he saw his mother walking toward him. Scott held up a bag of Chinese takeout and Melissa's face lit up.

"Oh thank god." She sighed, grabbing the food from Scott's arms. "I'm starving."

She put the box of food on the front desk and stopped herself from opening the box, realizing she had just neglected her son.

"I'm sorry." She said, turning back to Scott and wrapping her arms around him in a sweet hug. "Thank you for bringing me dinner."

"Is everything okay?" Scott asked once his mother's arms fell back to her sides.

Melissa released a heaving sigh and let her shoulders droop.

"Yeah, except for the fact that half the accident victims in a ten car pile up are being re-routed here from downtown and the ER attendant isn't answering any of him pages."

"Uh what does not answering any of Jim's pages mean?" Scott asked.

"It means that no one can find him so now we have to wait for the on call doctor to get here." She replied.

I noticed a middle aged woman walk up behind Melissa and tap her shoulder.

"Excuse me miss?" She asked, I noticed that her shirt had blood on it and she was clutching her stomach in pain. "Could I please have something for the pain?"

Melissa looked at the two of us apologetically and turned to the woman. "Okay I'm sorry. I know." She said to her. "But actually giving you something could complicate things. So you really just need to wait for the doctors."

Melissa sat the grimacing woman down on one of the empty waiting room chairs and turned to a nurse behind the front desk, who was on the phone.

"How much longer until the on cal gets here?" Melissa asked. The nurse put and let out a stressful sigh.

"It's going to be about ten minutes." She told Melissa.

She scoffed in frustration and turned to another moaning patient. Scott sat down next to the older woman who was trying not to cry.

"You know, I think I read online that sometimes human contact can help with pain." He said softly. The woman nodded in agreement like she knew exactly what he was talking about.
