Tenko and I were outside after my dad let me go. The two best friends were sitting on the ground, petting Mon chan, when a girl with black hair skipped outside. Her hair were pulled into two pigtails, and her smile was bright as she came closer. "Eiko!"
"Hana!" I yelled back in happiness as the older girl wrapped her arms around her. She and I became friends when I had my first playdate with Tenko. Tenko and Hana would sometimes fight on who would play with me. "How are you?"
Hana smiled. "I'm excited now that you're here. I want to show you something."
She turned away before closing her eyes. A few moments passed, and as every child, restlessness welled up in her and Tenko. Hana watched her friend though, whacking away her restlessness, making sure to pay attention. A breeze danced around us before wrapping itself around Hana. The wind began to pick up, lifting Hana a few inches from the ground. A few seconds later, Hana dropped back onto the ground, panting slightly.
I squealed, jumping up and latching onto my older friend. "You got a quirk! You float!"
Hana smiled in happiness, rubbing her reddening cheeks. "Yeah. I got it late. It's pretty weak but it's better than nothing."
In the books that I read, most kids would get their quirks around four years old. Sometimes it would be earlier, but it was rare to get a quirk after five years old. Hana was six years old, and everyone thought that she would be Quirkless.
Being Quirkless isn't bad, but they were treated differently because of something that they don't have. Society's behavior regarding the Quirkless and heroes were something that Mom would talk about. She spoke against bullying because she said that she lost someone in the past. Why should we discriminate a Quirkless being when all of us were once Quirkless?
I turned towards Tenko who quickly hid a sad smile. He was afraid that he would get left behind since he was the last of us three not to get a quirk. I smiled, pulling him into our hug. "Don't worry, Tenko. You'll get a quirk, too. Maybe you'll get it late like Hana."
A bright smile appeared on his face. "Yeah!"
"Do you still want to be a hero, Hana?" I asked her as we sat on the grass. My hand was petting Mon-chan who had plopped his head onto Tenko's lap.
She shook her head. "Nope. I don't think my quirk is strong enough to be a hero, but I found out that UA also has a support department. I thought that they just had heroes, but they have a support, general studies, and business classes."
Tenko stared at his older sister with wide eyes. "You're not going to be a hero?"
Hana smiled at her younger brother. "No, but I'll still support you. I'm going to do everything I can to make you the best hero!"
I smiled, looking up into the sky. I laughed before pulling on Tenko's shirt to make him fall back. He let out an "oomph" before joining me in cloud gazing. He smiled softly, pointing into the sky. "That looks like a bunny!"
I giggled. "No! That's All Might. See those two things? It's his hair!"
Hana snorted. "No, Tenko's right. It's a bunny. Those things are his ears."
Pouting, I huffed. "Fine. It's a bunny."
Tenko laughed before pointing a small finger at a cloud. "Oh, look at that one! It looks like Mon-chan."
Hana and I giggled at the cloud that really did look like the corgi that had laid next to them. Time ticked by as the three children laughed about anything and were enjoying their time together.
"Eiko, time to go," Dad called to me from the door. I sat up and turned towards him. His red hair was messier than usual as if he ran his hands through it constantly. Dark bags were under his usual happy eyes, but he no longer seemed happy after mom left. He was slouched, as if he was burdened with the world on his shoulders.
Hana, Tenko, and I scrambled back inside, starting to talk about the latest cartoon episode on tv. Once Dad gave me my jacket, I turned towards my best friends. Both of them seemed sad that I was leaving. Our visits weren't long no matter how much we begged our parents. I threw my arms around Hana.
She wrapped her arms around me. "Don't be sad, Eiko. We'll see you soon."
I nodded with a smile on my face. "Of course!"
Tenko was shyer than Eiko but he shuffled forward. His arms wrapped around my torso, squeezing me tightly. If it were up to us, we would never be apart. We were the best of friends. He whispered in my ear. "You remember our promise?"
I rolled my eyes. "I do. Together."
We stepped back. Dad reached down, linking our hands together. I smiled at the two siblings, waving at them. "See you soon!"
As we got into the car and drove away, I never would have thought that the next time I would see my best friend would be years later. When society and our parents had failed us both. When we were no longer innocent to the dark that existed in the world.
