"No," I said and stopped walking. "How do you expect me to be able to do this?"
Johanna smirked and turned. I'd forgotten we were exactly the same height. Maybe I could borrow some of her Capitol-worthy clothes.
"Listen up princess," she snarled and I took a step back, surprised. "You're not the only one who was in the arena. You're not even the only one here who was in the arena twice. So pull up your big girl pants and stop being helpless. This is the big city, and you chose to be here."
She spun around and left me to deal with both my bags. I was stunned. Johanna had always been sarcastic and a bit temperamental, but what she had said was completely uncalled for. Or was it?
I dragged my bags up the hill and through the door of the cabin. Johanna was sitting upside down in a chair with a book. Her head rested on a small coffee table. On the other side of the cabin there was a little kitchen, just big enough to cook in. I sighed when I saw the bed situation. There were two single beds, almost right beside each other. To the right there was a small bathroom, with a toilet and sink. I frowned.
"Where's the shower?" I asked and Johanna grinned wickedly.
"Follow me," she said simply and calmly. I followed her outside and turned the corner. There was a square of curtains with a hose nailed to the side of the house with a piece of wood.
"You're kidding me," I groaned. "No way. There is no way I'm showering out here."
"It's still better than your old house," Johanna grumbled and went back inside. I hastily followed her.
"So, where do we get our food?" I asked once we were both sitting in armchairs and taking small sips from mint tea I had cooked up quickly.
Johanna gestured with her head out the window.
"Grocery store, freshest you've ever gotten," she muttered and winked.
I frowned at her. She'd been acting odd and uncharacteristicly nice lately. It was beginning to creep me out."Okay, what's up?" I asked and grabbed her arm. "You've been acting really nice and it's bothering me. Who are you and what have you done with sassy Johanna Mason?"
"Well, honey," she said sympathetically. "You did just walk out on your fiancé, move to the place you grew up hating, not to mention where your sister died, just to be with your childhood best friend who you've been in love with while being engaged to your fiancé."
I looked at her quizically and she laughed deeply.
"Your life could be made into one of those crappy shows the Capitol people watch," she laughed and took her arm back from me, which was easy. My hand was loose and limp.
"Okay," I muttered and tried to recover from what she had said. "Just go back to your old self, alright?"
Johanna sighed loudly and jumped to the couch.
"Fine," she whined but I knew she was smiling under her book.
