Dozens of twigs slapping me in the face jolted me back to my senses. Johanna had slowed down once we had reached the forest, but her grip on me hadn't slackened. For someone considerably shorter than I was, she was incredibly strong. I screamed in protest and slapped her back, but she only readjusted me and kept running. Trees blocked my view of whatever the lights were coming from, but they still illuminated my new house perfectly.
Suddenly, a silhouette started waving it's arms frantically, and people I hadn't even seen go inside the cabin came pouring out and down the hill after us.
"Johanna!" I wailed, thrashed wildly and pummelled her back with my fists. "People are following us, what's happening?"
She didn't answer for a minute, then put me down roughly.
"I'm only going to explain once, so pay attention," she growled and continued to push me through the forest. "Just because we won against the Capitol doesn't mean we won the war. There are still followers of the Capitol out there, watching and waiting to take things back. Gale thought it would be safer if you were down here where we could protect you, instead of back in twelve with Peeta. I agreed with him."
It took me a minute to process what she had said, even though she hadn't said much. Hearing Gale and Peeta's names in the same sentence made me warm up but freeze over at the same time.
"So there's a rebellion... On the rebellion?" I clarified and Johanna nodded. "So can't we be in our house? How did Gale know to come? When can we go back, when can I see him?"
Johanna elbowed me roughly in the arm.
"Calm down princess, we know what's happening," she jumped over a fallen tree with confidence and ushered me over it. "That was just a drill, in case our house became a target. The Capitol rebels might know where you are now, and they might not. As far as they knew, Peeta was everything to you and Gale was nothing. Peeta could be in danger right now."
A warmth spread threw me but I quickly put it out. I couldn't be that horrible to Peeta, he loved me and he always had.
"Okay," I said finally and stopped. "Can we go back now?"
Johanna glared at me but nodded. She pulled a small radio-like object out of her pocket. It was about the size of an apple.
"Lumberjack to Soldier, do you copy?" She said and smacked me when I smirked. "The situation is explained, are we clear to return to the Nest?"
A moment passed and the radio crackled to life.
"Soldier to Lumberjack, you are clear to return to the Nest," Gale's voice came through the radio scratchy and rough, but there was no doubt it was his voice.
"On our way, Lumberjack out," she said and put the radio in her pocket again.
I frowned at her but she shrugged and offered no explanation as to what the code names were for.
"In case the rebels find the line?" I suggested.
Johanna nodded and we turned around to walk back through the forest the way we came.
