Katrina gets herself a bowl of ice cream and sits at a table at the opposite end of the parlour. Alex and Cloe watch as Braden sits down with them. His amusement fades.

"You kissed her?" Alex asks, more calmly than before.

"Yeah, so?"

"No, I mean, you kissed her. She wasn't ready. It was you."

"Ah, I see what he's saying. He's saying that you did kissed with passion and feeling and she didn't."

"Yeah and I'm kinda regretting it now. She wanted me to be a fake date for her."

"Because?" Cloe drags.

"I'm regretting it because she didn't feel the same way." He glances back at Katrina who stares sombrely at her melting ice cream and spins her spoon around the bowl. "She doesn't deserve to feel bad because I'm upset that don't get to be with her." He wipes his eye and looks up at them.

"Katrina really just isn't ready to be in a relationship right now though." Alex says. "I see why you'd like her though. She's really something."

"I'm picking up similar feelings between you two, do you both like Katrina?"

"What?!" Alex exclaims. "No, Katrina and I, we're just friends!"

"I don't know man, I think you might be falling for her too. Be careful, as you said, she's not ready to be in a relationship. And then there's the whole 'living on the other side of the world' thing and-"

"Hey!"

"Just saying"

"I'm not in love with my best friend. I'd go to the ends of the earth to make her happy and maybe someday I will. If I could get a job, I'd be saving to go home. I'd lay under the stars with her and she could talk about what life would have been like in that exact spot 500 years ago. We would go for lunch and pick dandelions and pretend that they were 'copters, like we used to. We'd net butterflies and release them and watch them flutter away gracefully. Then, we'd watch a thriller because you can only have so much calmness in your life. That's Katrina. There's no ooey-gooey mushy stuff in our friendship. No kissing, no romantic stares, no candle-lit dinners. And that's fine. I want nothing more."

Alex takes a breath.

"Do you really mean all that?"

He looks back and sees Katrina with an empty ice cream bowl in hand and tears stained down her face.

"Every word," he smiles and stands as her face lights up. They hug and smile happily. Cloe observes intently and almost enviously. Braden just looks down, everything that Alex said hit him. He knew that Alex was a good guy.
