The young oriental woman began to speak and Hange, Levi, Erwin, and Mikasa listened intently.
When I was ten years old, my mother's best friend had a child with a white man, whose surname was Ackerman. The young woman's lip curled slightly, but she continued with her story.
I was there along with my mother when the child was born, I was there to hear her say the child's name was to be Mikasa. My mother's best friend turned to me with a smile. She was dear to me, like family, I considered her an Aunt, or an older sister. " Will you protect her if her father and I are unable to?" She asked me, as if a child could ever understand the gravity of a promise like that. I said yes, thinking that the child and I would grow up like siblings, much like my mother and her best friend had.The young woman paused here. Mikasa felt her heart constrict tightly. "Mikasa knows her mother and father were persecuted, for her race and his surname. That is why they lived in seclusion. A man named Kenny Ackerman knows why. I know for a fact that Levi knows this man, but that will be explained later." Her dark eyes bored into Mikasa's and her face softened slightly. She continued with her story.
Later that day, my mother would whisk me away from this cage, beyond the wall with what was left of our people. She paused, seeing confusion. "By my people, I mean Asians, but I believe you call us Orientals. We tried our best to have Mikasa's family come with us, but Mikasa's mother refused to abandon her husband and newborn child. We had meant for all of them to accompany us, but Mikasa's mother was convinced that the monsters outside of the walls were more dangerous than the ones within. How wrong she was. "
For a year, I struggled to lead my people, to give them the life they deserved, free of prejudice and death. We built a city, miles away from the walls, heavily fortified. At first we suffered casualties, we drew titans like a moth to a flame. But I learned quickly. She gave a dark laugh, devoid of any humor. Chills ran up Mikasa's spine.
I had my friend create something almost identical to the 3DMG the Scouting Legion uses, except it is lighter, more efficient, and only carries one spare pair of blades. I had the most promising train with the gear relentlessly until I had a titan killing force to be reckoned with. My people are surviving." When we heard of the death of her and her husband we came as fast as we could, but news travels slowly from here to our city. We've named it New Asia. By the time I arrived, Mikasa had already been taken in by the Jaegers." The young woman gave a small smile at Mikasa. "You seemed content, at least as normal as one could be after the horrors you've experienced." She was addressing Mikasa directly now. "I don't think you would have given up your new family for someone you would never have remembered."
Mikasa felt stunned. She had a family that she had never known about? "My mother never mentioned you," Mikasa stated. The young woman bowed her head, "Of course not, she would have assumed we were dead. My name is Mei. You are older now, old enough to make your own decisions. I have come to ask you to join us. You would be safe with us, the last death we had because of a titan was five years ago. We've learned since then." She paused, "And of course, Eren and Armin would be welcome as well."
Mikasa's face must have betrayed her shock. Mei smiled gently, "we've been back here a few times," she said as way of explanation. "I know all you've ever wanted was to see them safe, but I think you know that Eren would never be content letting others fight for him. If you join us, not only will he be able to fight titans with minimal danger, Armin would get to see the outside world like he's always dreamed of. We have top notch research facilities." Out of the corner of her eyes, Mikasa saw Hange's excited look.
Mikasa's thoughts raced. Eren and Armin would be safe. She could have a family that had been stolen from her.
Mei seemed to notice her inner struggle. "Think on it," the enigmatic woman suggested,"I do believe we'll be here for a while." Mei looked questioningly at Erwin.
Erwin's eyes glinted. "How do you have such minimal casualties?" he questioned urgently. The corner of Mei's lip twitched upwards. "We would be happy to share our training strategies and battle tactics if it would help us gain your trust." She turned to Mikasa, "Of course you would be free to come back anytime you wished."
Mikasa's heart pounded. This offer seemed to good to be true. "We'll camp outside with our horses if you don't mind," Mei continued, speaking to Erwin. Erwin's eyebrows knitted together, "Are you sure, we could offer you accommodations here." Mei shook her head. She turned and left, her entourage followed her silently. No one even tried to stop them. Only then did Mikasa realize she had not seen the other's faces.
Levi immediately turned to Erwin, "You're not going to trust them, are you?" Erwin's eyes were clouded, he was lost in thought. "If they have the capabilities they say they do, who are we to refuse if it means less lives are lost?" Levi fell silent, his eyes watching Mikasa.
Okay guys, next part will be up soon, sorry for the slow setup but I have to lay down the foundation before the real fun begins.
