Mei and Mikasa made the trip in 4 days. Mei set a brutal pace but Mikasa was strong. Strong enough to handle anything. Mei rarely spoke, sensing Mikasa was trapped inside her own mind. On the 4th day the walled city came into view after they passed through the forest of giant trees.
Upon seeing the woman worth a hundred soldiers the gate opened for them. Mikasa didn't know it but Hange and Mei both already knew of both Levi and Mikasa's feelings and Mei had sent a message ahead to Hange. Hange knew they had arrived and hurried to tell Levi.
Levi barely glanced up as Hange barged into his office. "Tch, what do you want four-eyes?" "Guess who came back to visit?" Hange said in a sing song voice.
Levi's heart lept but his normal stoic face showed no change. Footsteps sounded in the corridor outside and Hange poked her head outside the doorway. She shot Levi a wicked grin and left. Two pairs of footsteps could be heard receding down the hallway.
Levi rubbed his eyes tiredly but abruptly stopped when a familiar slender silhouette appeared in his doorway. His breath rushed through his body. He breathed. He felt alive again. Entranced by the dark swirling pools of her eyes he inhaled shakily.
Mikasa seemed similarly transfixed. She stood frozen in the doorway her heartbeat pounding loudly in her ears, drowning out all other sounds. What was it about this man that made her feel this way? Even her beloved friend Eren failed to evoke such a response in her. Eren was safe, Eren was home. Levi was the exact opposite. Levi was dark and dangerous. He was unpredictable to her. Having known Eren and Armin for a long time she knew them quite well. Levi on the other hand never failed to surprise her. Like the time when he had hurt his leg saving her from the female titan.
They both stayed there frozen in time until Mikasa broke the silence. Her voice was hoarse after days of silence, " I came back to visit you." She visibly swallowed. "You asked me to." Levi's mind rapidly tried to process the fact that she was really here. She was right in front of him visible in the flesh.
"I see," was all he could think to say. Mikasa felt a coldness permeate her body. That was it? Was it to late for her to fix her mistake of not revealing her true feelings? She had to try to fix this. Despite everything that Eren was to her she knew that deep down that their relationship was family. He was home, but Levi was something else. Levi was her equal, better than her in some things. She could learn from him. But he could learn from her too.
Desperate to break the heavy silence, she blurted out, "I missed you." Levi's head snapped up at that. Did she just say what he thought she said. She missed him? That meant she had feelings for him, right? Why hadn't she said something before?
It was almost as if Mikasa was reading his mind, "I was afraid," she confessed. "I don't want to lose people I love anymore but it's too late for that." But she had come to the conclusion that denying her feelings would not make them go away. She was used to openly showing her affection of Eren, but with Levi she was treading in the dark.
Levi sat still as a stone at her words. Then his mind reconnected to his body and he sprang into action. He was up and out of his chair and around the desk before Mikasa could blink.
She closed her eyes and buried her face in the crook of neck, inhaling his scent of pinewood and a whiff of soap. Her fingers clutched at his jacket as his arms securely wrapped around her. One arm firmly fastened around her waist and the other hand buried in her soft, silky hair. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling the sweet scent of lavender and mint.
Tears leaked through Mikasa's closed eyelids, wetting Levi's jacket, but for once in his life, Levi found that he didn't mind at all. His voice was muffled by her hair, but she heard him nevertheless, "It's about time, brat." She let out a choked laugh.
Was this love? This intoxicating feeling of belonging, of being cared for, of being special?
Levi's face for once was not set in his usual expression with his brow furrowed and his eyes dull. He let himself melt, pressed against her slim figure he felt complete, like he had been missing something his entire life and he had finally found it.Yay, finally those two sucked it up and went for it! And I added a picture haha, don't ask why, I'm just really weird. See you guys next week :)
