“What the hell Leila!” Erin looked at me as though I’d grown two heads.
“What?”
“Your face… what happened?”
“Nothing” I looked away from her my locker had suddenly become more interesting than Erin.
“Don’t give me that Lei” Erin could see right through me.
“I- I fell over” I hesitated trying to sound as convincing as possible and failing miserably.
“Do I seriously look that stupid?” Erin raised an eyebrow as she folded her arms.
“Just leave it Erin!” I sounded pissed and before I knew it I had stormed off passing Josh who smiled then frowned at me. I looked at him blankly but didn’t stop.
I had managed to get through this morning without being questioned. Dad had been on the phone to an important client so apart from a quick good morning kiss he didn’t really take any notice of me. Chace had woken up late so I had been on my way out as he came down the stairs. Now I found myself wondering through the school because I couldn’t face Erin and Josh.
I let my mind wonder back to last night. My hand unconsciously brushed my cheek how could I have been so stupid. Why didn’t I listen to Josh? I was so lucky that Mr Walker happened to walk out when he did. My eye was a little swollen it had gone down a considerable amount since I had woke this morning. The bruising was bad it covered just under half of my right cheek. I had attempted covering it with a little more foundation and powder than normal but I couldn’t have done a good job if Erin had noticed.
Why didn’t dad notice then? He must have been totally wrapped up in his client. I’m just thankful he didn’t notice.
“Leila” My thoughts were broken by Mr Daniels my homeroom teacher.
“Mr Daniels” I forced a smile.
“I’m glad I’ve caught you I need to tell you something” He smiled showing his coffee stained teeth. Scratching his head through his matted grey hair he looked as though he was deep in thought. He scanned my face as he did so.
“What’s happened to your face?” He asked pointing a frail, wrinkled finger at my cheek.
“I fell” I replied a little too quickly. Looking at me cautiously for a second he could tell I was lying but decided not to push me any further.
“Ok well Mr Walker has asked to see you this morning. I suppose you could make your way up to his classroom now”
“Ok”
“I’ll mark you as present” He smiled.
“Thank you” I returned his smile watching him wonder off in one direction before saying something to himself and turning in another direction. I’m sure he was losing his mind with old age. He was a little odd but he meant well.
Laughing a little I began to make my way to Mr Walker’s classroom. He was going to have a bunch of questions for me. And a lecture.
Reaching his classroom I peeked through the door window and noticed he wasn’t in there. Walking in any way I sat at the desk I normally took. It must have been five minutes later he walked in humming what sounded like Bruno Mars locked out of heaven to himself totally oblivious to the fact that I was in the room. Setting his coffee down on his desk he looked up noticing me.
“Leila” He smiled. My heart went into over drive he was… beautiful.
“How are you?” He added and sat on the edge of his desk.
“I’m ok” I smiled.
“Hm. That bruise doesn’t look too good and your eyes a little swollen”
“It was worse this morning”
“I don’t doubt that” He replied jumping off the desk and walking towards me. Stopping in front of me he slid his hands in his pockets “Has anyone asked about it?”
“Just Erin and Mr Daniels”
“And what did you say?”
“That I fell over” I looked to the floor with embarrassment as he let out a little chuckle.
“The ever so faithful I fell over line. You know they’re going to find out soon. Did Chace not notice?”
“He woke up late. He didn’t get a chance to see me” I explained.
“Ok… has uh- that guy tried contacting you?”
“Mark? No”
“Good. Do you think he will?”
“Honestly I don’t know. Could we please stop with the twenty-one questions” I sighed.
“Sorry. I’m just- I’m just concerned” He dragged a hand out his pocket and scratched the back of his head sheepishly.
“Don’t be I’m fine” I attempted a reassuring smile.
I watched as he bent down in front of me. He drew his hand up hesitating a little as if he was fighting an inner battle and smoothed my cheek gently so he didn’t cause me any pain. The feeling of his fingers trailing my cheek was electric. Our eyes locked and I watched as passion and what seemed like affection cloud his blue pools. It seemed as though a flame had been set alight inside of me all I wanted to do was let my fingers roam through his hair and kiss him.
“I have to go” I said as the bell went.
“No you don’t. Mr Daniels knows you’re here with me”
“I have to go” I said with a little more force. This couldn’t happen not know not ever pulling his hand away reluctantly I watched as he stood up and sighed. Turning his back to me I stood mumbled a goodbye and left.
