Broken.

One word. That was all we had. A simple word that could describe us, our lives, the truth.

I was vulnerable. I showed so much of my life, my past, in less than 6 letters.

And of course, only one person took note of it; Mr.Perfect.

Riley walked into the class with me that day. For once, we were the first ones there. It was supposed to be an average day. I didn't think I would have to label myself.

Riley, the angel she is, turned to me, a small smile playing on her lips. "I know what we're going to do to help him."

I didn't have to think twice to know who she was talking about. Farkle. Bless his weird little soul. He's always getting into trouble. But that's okay. We are always there to protect him. And he is for us, no matter how cocky he is at times.

I bit my lip, holding back a smirk as I knowingly raised my eyebrows."What we gonna do?"

Silently, she walked over to her desk and pulled out a black marker from her backpack. Turning back to me, she whispered. "Everybody has something to say." She glanced at the marker in her hand. "Nobody... Is a nobody."

I blinked, speechless.

She handed me the black marker. "Insecure." She whispered as she pointed to her forehead.

"Riley, no. You're so hopeful and sweet. You can put anything on- you're not going to-"

"Insecure. Just write it. Please."

I took a shaky breath and wrote the word.

I pulled away to observe my best friend. She looked the same. Happy, full of hope, but INSECURE was written across her forehead. I wanted to throw my arms around her, to hug her tightly and tell her how lucky and perfect she was, but I couldn't. I was broken.

"Maya, what's your word?"

I paused. "Okay. I'm okay."

"I want the truth." Riley stared at me, her small brown eyes boring into mine.

I paused. Again. "Fine. I'm... broken."

She wrote the word without hesitation. I pulled away when she was finished and gave her a small smile. "I'm okay too."

"I know."

She took my hand into hers and wondered out loud. "I wonder what Lucas's word will be." She sighed dreamily. "I'll be right back. I'm going to go get Farkle." She skipped away cheerfully, leaving me behind for once.

My smile fell. She didn't care. I should've known. My silly goofball only cared about-

The door cracked open. The one and only Lucas Friar walked in.

"Hey Sundance." I cracked a smirk and pretended to tip an invisible cowboy hat, but he just stared at me. "How's the cattle holding up?"

Oh, right. Broken.

He walked towards me, smiling sadly."So.. You're broken, Huh? I thought you were Maya."

"Oh, can it Mr.Perfect," I spat.

"You're right. I'm Mr.Perfect." He smirked as he picked up the marker from Riley's desk. "And not in the good way."

I stared up at him. He stared back at me. For once, the world- no. My world... Was still. My world was... Actually okay.

He bent down, and I slowly wrote the words on his forehead; Mr.Perfect.

He stood back up, still staring at me. "Maya?"

"Yeah?" My voice came out high pitched and soft, and I mentally scowled at myself.

"Thank you." His forest green eyes gleamed with this... Sincerity that I haven't seen in such a long time.

"I'm okay."

Just then- the entire class class hopped in, riley leading them all. Each person had something written on their skin.

Everybody was talking, and Lucas went and joined Farkle and others, but I couldn't move. I wasn't broken though.

I was in love.

With Lucas Friar.

The boy who my best friend, Riley Matthews, had a crush on.

Oh boy.
