Jaylyn heard Jo gasp as they made it to the second floor. In front of them was the slumped form of a teenage boy; stabs and gashes covered the body in deep, jagged, out of control streaks. She observed the walls and floor, which were both coated in blood, before going into the bedroom where a woman was lying dead on the bed, stab wounds through her chest, the man however bore similar slashes to the boy. Henry came in a few moments later with a grim look on his face as he went to study the parents while she continued to observe at the splatter on the walls.

“What do you think of this?” Jaylyn asked as Jo and Hanson came in.

“That whoever did this must be insane.” Hanson replied as he glanced around. “I mean look at this, it’s almost like they wanted us to know they were killing people.”

Jaylyn snapped her head towards him. “They did, nothing in the house seems to have been taken and the fire in the front was meant to get attention.”

            “Why would you think that?”

Jo answered for her this time. “Because if they planned to cover up the murder as an accident they could have started it inside.”

“May I ask who this family is?” Henry asked suddenly as he walked over to them.

“Uh, the neighbors said they were the Treen family.” Hanson gave them an uneasy look. “Something tells me Lieutenant won’t be happy to hear this.”

“Oh well.” Jaylyn said. “Life isn’t fair, looks like it decided to remind him of that.”

She could feel Henry’s gaze boring into her as she watched medics carry out the bodies to be taken to the morgue where he could study them farther. Jaylyn didn’t have to be a genius ether to figure out why he was looking at her, he had after all, heard her conversation with Samuel. Henry had every right to think it was her, who killed them, not to mention they were killed the night before she showed back up in everyone’s lives.

“Well, we might as well head back.” Jo commented. “We have our information for now, and stalling for time before telling Lieutenant Treen will only make things worse.”

This time they caught a ride back with Hanson in his new car as they followed the medics back to the precinct where they were immediately cornered by Treen, his eyes burning with fury.

“I see you heard the news.” Jo told him quietly. “I’m sorry, I swear we’ll catch whoever was behind this.”

“You better, and fast, that was my brother and his family that was murdered.” Treen growled and flicked his gaze over to Jaylyn. “Carver, when you find them, I’ll let you prove just how trustworthy you can be. You get to interrogate them and get the information out by any means necessary.”

Jaylyn didn’t like the sound of the last part. “You mean… threaten them?”

“Or more if needed. I just want answers.”

“Lieutenant, is harming our suspects not illegal?” Henry questioned, just as shocked as Jaylyn.

“Dr. Morgan, go take detective Martinez and check out the bodies. I’m sure they’re in the morgue by now.” Samuel ordered.

Henry looked like he was about to protest but Jaylyn watched as Jo guided him away with a shake of her head. She turned back towards Treen and saw him glaring down at her. “Lieutenant?”

“You will kill whoever did this do you understand?” Treen hissed so only she could hear. “If you don’t I will make sure to pin you for those murders.”

“You know.” Jaylyn cocked her head towards him not intimidated. “Displays of anger like the ones you are showing are signs of an unhealthy way of controlling your grief. If you are going to run this place you should pull yourself together!”

His expression was one akin to a person being slapped across the face or a cold bucket of water being dumped on his head. Clearly no one had said anything like that to him before. “Carver, get back to work. I’ll pretend this conversation never happened.”

Jaylyn smirked as she left. “What conversation?”

“What did he want?” Jo asked quickly as Jaylyn joined them.

            “Nothing.”

“He wants you to torture people for information, what do you mean nothing?”

“I convinced him otherwise, calmed him down a bit.” Jaylyn replied calmly. “He was just a bit over come with grief.”

“Well we found some unusual markings from a knife-”

Henry cut Jo off. “A roman dagger, I’ll guess, considering the width of the cuts. It would be extremely rare though Abe knows a certain Frenchman we can ask about a weapon such as this she could have sold recently.”

“Right.” Jo replied before getting back to what she had been saying. “Anyway, the victims also show bruising from where they put up a fight during the struggle. I’m stopping by the crime scene to collect more blood samples for the boys in the lab to match up.”

“Do you think it was Lucas?” Jaylyn asked. “He wasn’t found was he? It could be him.”

“No.” Henry disagreed. “These marks are made by pure rage being released. Lucas might be feeling angry about his failure but nothing on this level.”

Jo gave him a curious look. “How do you know how the killer felt?”

“The way these marks aren’t precise, the killer didn’t try killing them slowly or quietly, the fact that nothing was stolen. The pure brutality of it is the give away. Whoever did this must have something against the family.”

“Do you think some of the neighbors lied about this?” Jaylyn asked. “One of them could have murdered them.”

“Hanson has some of his men still going around questioning them. All we can do at the moment is wait.” Jo informed her, clearly not content with that fact.

“But it’s barely noon.” She protested. “What are we supposed to do while we wait?”

“Take our lunch break and come back to see if there’s any new information.”

“Great.” Jaylyn sighed. “Call me when it’s time to come back. I’m going to think this over, see if we’re missing something that’s right in front of us.”

Henry locked up the bodies and followed her. “Yes, and I can take you to see the Frenchman.”

Jaylyn noticed Jo give Henry a hurt look as he ignored her and made a mental note to lecture him on it, after all they were the perfect team without her, if anything Henry should be ignoring her. Once they were outside alone she turned on him. “What was that?”

            “What was what?”

She gave him a look. “You just completely brushed Jo off back there, she could have come with us to help.”

“We aren’t going to see the Frenchman yet. I can send Abe to talk to her but I wanted to ask you about exactly what happened when you died.”

            “Henry that isn’t important.”

“It is. You died for real. What would happen if you get killed and don’t come back?”

“The world would be better off.” Jaylyn got into a taxi with Henry close behind. “Trust me, Henry. You don’t want to know.”
