Jaylyn looked down at the unmoving form of the Frenchman, she wasn’t dead, just unconscious. That was all she needed, the wound she had dealt to the woman’s head was enough to make her forget who she was before she told the police anything else. Of course being the owner of antique weaponry the Frenchman had put up a fight, two stab wounds on Jaylyn’s shoulder blades were proof enough for that. She put her jacket back on, which sent more blood running down her back, to hide her bloodied shirt and cleaned off the knife before leaving and heading back towards the antique shop. The sun was setting and she knew Henry would be back, Jaylyn didn’t need him to be lecturing her about leaving while injured.

She looked up at the fire escape with dread, she would have to climb up to get inside without Abe questioning where she’d been, or worse, Henry if he had gotten there already. Jaylyn didn’t even take the time to register the fact there was dried blood on the rusty metal as she climbed up the ladder to get to the stairs. She opened up the window and climbed inside her room Henry had set aside for her and didn’t even notice Adam sitting in the dark room until he cleared his throat.

“Adam?” Jaylyn jumped a bit and spun around to face him. “Why are you here?”

He stood up and strolled over to her, almost seeming to glide over the floor. “To speak with you.”

Once he was close enough Jaylyn could take in the large amount of blood, none of it seeming to be his own, staining his clothing. “About what? Adam, who did you kill?’

“It was to protect you.” Adam replied before elaborating. “Lucas, do you really think he wouldn’t try killing you again?”

“He was a coward, I could have finished him off easily. I don’t need your help to defend myself against people like him anymore.” She saw his eyes darken with concern and another emotion he normal never showed. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Jaylyn… you’ve changed.” Adam stated and continued to examine her as if she weren’t real anymore.

“We all change eventually.” She shrugged unconcerned. “I thought you always wanted me to become more… how should I put this… emotionless, able to kill without caring? Like you?”

“I had Jack to do that.” Adam guided her to sit down. “I thought I wanted you to change… once.”

“Once? You had me kill people in hopes one day I would just let go of the guilt of taking a life.” Jaylyn looked across the room at the blank wall with a dark smile on her face. “In all honesty I’m just getting revenge for my past, to help me move on.”

She could feel Adam’s gaze burning into her but didn’t look towards him as he spoke. “Jay, I don’t think I like what you’re saying.”

“What would you rather me say?” She turned towards him. “That what I have done is destroying me? That I don’t know what to do? That I’m losing my humanity?”

“I want you to say what the Jaylyn Carver I met would say. That you are sickened by the thought of murdering innocent people in cold blood.” Adam glanced at her, taking in the fact that blood was seeping through her jacket. “You’re injured.”

            “Don’t change the subject.”

Adam shoved her onto her back, holding her down, and listened as she let out a hiss of pain. “Then tell me why, why you suddenly decided to change.”

“I hated the fact I was weak enough to trust someone who only wished to kill me.” Jaylyn winced as he put more weight on her shoulders. “I-I just wanted to put my past to rest! Finding the family that descended from my killer was my chance… I haven’t changed completely.”

“I understand.” Adam replied quietly. “Though I am slightly disappointed.”

“I didn’t ask for your opinion.” Jaylyn grumbled as she tried to get up. “Now if you don’t mind I need to go stitch myself up.”

            Adam sat back. “Need help?”

Jaylyn shook her head and left to go to the bathroom across the hall. A few minutes later however she came back in with a needle, string, and a meek expression. “Actually, I think I do… I can’t stitch it accurately.”

“Lie down on your stomach, I’ll take care of it.” Adam waited until she stopped moving before taking out his knife and cutting open the back of her shirt, and examined the two gashes over her shoulder blades. “What did you do? Get a sword driven into you?”

“Kind of.” Jaylyn tried to relax as she felt the needle start weaving through her skin.

“Keep this up and you’re going to be covered more stitches than not.” Adam sighed as he started working on the second gash.

“I can always have you blow my brains out.” Jaylyn joked with a dry laugh. “It would be a bit hard to explain to my coworkers though…”

She went silent again and felt Adam paused as a door opened downstairs and voices started talking, sounded like Henry was back. Adam finished patching her up and she heard him leave the room for a moment to put the extra supplies away.

“Jay, are you staying here?” Adam asked as he came back in and settled down beside her. “I can’t stay much longer unless you want Henry and I to start an argument.”

“I’m sure he won’t mind if I stay.” She replied after stifling a yawn. “Did you finish cleaning the blood out of my room yet?”

“No.” Adam shifted his position as he head footsteps coming up the stairs. “I was actually thinking tha-”

A knock on the door silenced him and Henry’s voice spoke up from the other side. “Jaylyn are you in there? Abe told me you stopped by.”

“You have to go.” Jaylyn told Adam quietly before speaking up to answer Henry. “Yeah, I’m coming.”

She placed her jacket on to hide the ruined shirt and checked to make sure Adam was gone before going to open the door to see what he wanted.
