Hogwarts was just like any school, except that it included 'magic' and 'supernatural phenomena'. There were strict teachers, kind teachers, boring teachers, and mean teachers. And anyone could not forget the ghosts, Peeves, and Mrs. Norris. The students hated the latter two, and the First Years were constantly surprised by the ghosts.

Lessons started the next day. First, there was astronomy - Lucinda did not dislike it; it was fine, though the night air was cold and the students had to wake up at midnight.

Three times a week, the First Years went out to the greenhouses to study Herbology, where they learned things about various plants and fungi.

Then there was the most boring class - History of Magic, the only class taught by a ghost, Professor Binns. Everyone except Hermione Granger was dozing off at the end of class. Lucinda wondered how Hermione could stay focused until the end of class - History itself was boring enough, and Professor Binns did not make it better.

Charms were fine and quite fun since the students were learning diverse types of magic.

Transfiguration was taught by Professor McGonagall, who was a strict teacher. She first gave scary warnings, then changed her desk into a pig and back again. Everyone was excited but soon realized that what Professor McGonagall showed them was a high-rank transfiguration. After taking many detailed notes, they were each given a match and started trying to turn into a needle. Only Teresa and Hermione managed to make a difference in their matches; Professor McGonagall even gave a rare smile.

As the students entered the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, they all frowned because of the strong garlic smell. There were many rumors around Professor Quirrell and the garlic smell, though Lucinda wondered if any of them were true. The Weasley twins - who told them about it - were infamous for their pranks.

At the end of the week, everyone was struggling with memorizing and the heaps of homework. The First Years always gathered in the common room and grumbled about stuff while doing their homework. Hermione chipped in to help the others - and it turned out that she became a great help.

Friday morning, at the Great Hall, Lucinda received a letter. It was from her parents. She sighed - she knew the moment would come, but the eleven-year-old was afraid. She ripped the envelope open.
