The smell of cooking sausages wafted into their cave. All three girls pressed into the back, they wished they could block it out.
Brianne crawled forward and peeked out. She couldn't see the boy.
The girl was with the woman who was turning the food.
There was a small deer on the far side of the clearing standing at the river and a large light brown wolf stood on the far side. Strangely neither animal seemed to notice the other.
When the deer turned around, it stared right into Brianne's eyes. She was captivated for a moment.
It was gorgeous.
She caught herself wondering if it was male or female. She had no way of knowing.
Movement caught her eye as the wolf leapt across the river towards the deer. Brianne tried and failed to stop a scream. Katy grabbed her and pulled her back. Kitty covered her mouth.
They pressed back as far as they could, barely breathing. Waiting for someone to come check who or what had made the noise.
They could hear the girl and the woman talking, but it wasn't one of them who rounded the corner. It wasn't a human at all.
It was the wolf.
It tilted its head at them in a curious way and turned back towards the humans. Brianne was able to get a proper look at it's body. Sleek and on the smaller side of full grown. Unless it wasn't full grown.
"I think it's a she-wolf," Brianne whispered. "That, or it's half starved which seems unlikely."
After a moment, the she-wolf turned back to them. They were all surprised when the deer came to stand beside the wolf.
It was only a baby, Brianne thought. Not a full baby, but certainly not full grown, not even close she thought.
The deer and wolf looked at each other before turning and walking out again.
"What just happened?" Brianne asked.
"I don't know..." Katy was shaking.
Kitty didn't answer.
Brianne wanted to crawl back over there and observe.
She didn't get a chance. The woman and her... Daughter, Brianne presumed, came in.
"Hello," the woman said.
"H-hi?" Katy answered, unsure if they should have or not.
"I'm Natali," the woman said, then pointed to the girl, "and this is Milli."
The boy entered a moment later with an older girl.
"This is Oki and Mark," Natali added.
The first thing Brianne noticed was Oki had a tail and ears and Mark had antlers. She stared at them a moment before realising that was rude.
"A-are they real?" She asked.
"Bria," Katy quietly scolded.
You can't ask that... Was implied behind her words.
"Yes, they are," Mark answered.
"And it's okay," Oki added, "we don't mind."
Kitty's stomach growled.
Natali looked over at her, "how long have you girls been here for?"
"Since just before you got here," Katy answered.
Brianna thought it was silly to pretend that hadn't been away from home for many days when they hadn't fixed their hair that morning. All three girls had their hair in plaits of some kind with fluffy bits and loose strands.
