A/N – This chapter was supposed to be a 'one million reads celebration'... it's extremely late, but here it is nonetheless. I think this is the longest imagine I've ever written, so prepare yourselves for a whole lot of Sub!Bucky.

—— ——

"Alright, it's time to split up. Sam, you head towards the base and cause a distraction. Nat and I will gather the intel and blow up the database when we're done. Y/N, you're with Bucky, go straight to your safe house and stay there until Nat and I give you the go ahead tomorrow morning. We can't afford to mess up this mission, so stick to the plan, got it?"

"Yes, mother," you teased, rolling your eyes. You'd always thought Steve took himself a little too seriously during missions, especially when it came to making sure the team followed their orders – though, to be fair, you had proved yourself to be a liability on more than one occasion.

"Buck, don't let her do anything stupid," he sighed, ignoring your childish jab at him. "Just... keep an eye on her."

I can never take my eyes off her anyway, Bucky wanted to say; it was true, he'd always had a soft spot for you, but there was no way his pride would ever let him confess. So he just nodded instead, ducking his head as he walked towards the motorcycle that was waiting for the two of you.

"Here," he muttered, holding out a helmet. He fought the urge to laugh when you reluctantly put it on, strapping it tightly under your chin, but you spotted his not-so-discreet smirk anyway.

"What?" you scoffed, knowing that you probably looked absolutely ridiculous in the oversized headgear. "Like you look any better than I do."

You were lying. Frustratingly, he looked good, too good, as he started up the engine of the bike, gesturing for you to hop on behind him. As you wrapped your arms around his torso, holding on for dear life, you found yourself praying that he couldn't somehow hear your heartbeat with his damned super soldier senses.

Luckily, the drive to your safe house wasn't too long; before you knew it, Bucky was pulling into the parking garage and kindly helping you to stand up again, even though you were absolutely fine. You almost wanted to snap at him, to tell him not to baby you, but part of you found his gentler side endearing, so you let it slide.

You'd stayed at this cabin before, but that didn't stop you from taking a second to admire it. It was situated in the outskirts of the city, surrounded by a few acres of woodland, and the stars were clearly visible above you. The interior was warm and homely, equipped with anything that you could possibly need while you were there.

"You've got the keys, right?" Bucky asked, grinning when you jangled the set at him in response. "You head inside, I've just gotta refill the oil tank, maybe put some air in the tyres too."

You nodded, sending him a mock salute as you walked up to the front door. Strangely, you could see that the living room light was already switched on, casting a dim orange glow through the curtains. However, this suburb was notorious for power cuts that sometimes messed with the electrics – nothing to be concerned about. Shrugging, you twisted the key in the lock, the hinges creaking slightly as the door swung open.

You could hear voices. Footsteps.

"Um, Bucky?" you called, laughing nervously. "I think there might be someone in—"

Suddenly, the door was ripped clean off its hinges, and all hell broke loose.

Saying there was "someone inside" had clearly been an understatement; at least eight men, all dressed in black kevlar suits, attempted to ambush you. One tried to pin your arms behind your back, but you swiftly elbowed him in the ribs, knocking him to the ground. Another aimed a pistol at your head, so you kicked his legs out from under him before grabbing the weapon, wasting no time in shooting every single assailant before you. It was brutal, but necessary – your time as an Avenger had desensitised you to death, anyway.
